Connected cars: Rohde & Schwarz Cybersecurity now provides dedicated security solutions for IoT automotive telematics

Building a secure automotive telematics platform to achieve a profitable business model for automakers and ecosystem partners is a challenging task for mobile network operators. As the platforms lack detailed security specifications and a standardized framework, they become an attractive target for cybercriminals. Rohde & Schwarz Cybersecurity now offers solutions that enable operators to build a second line of defense to protect platforms and vehicles. The security solutions will be presented at this year’s Mobile World Congress.

Leipzig, Germany – February 21, 2017 – Mobile network operators like Vodafone, Verizon, AT&T and Deutsche Telekom have expanded beyond their traditional role as connectivity providers to offer end-to-end connected car platforms and services directly to automotive OEMs and aftermarket suppliers. By creating new business models for the connected car market, they are able to tap new revenue potential.

Carriers’ telematics platforms and services use GSM devices to track sensor data from connected vehicles, for example position and status of the vehicle, movement behavior or fuel consumption. The platform receives the car data from the vehicle through carrier-owned mobile IoT gateways.
The stored data can then be monetized by operators for multiple use cases such as over-the-air customer services (OTA), usage-based-insurance (UBI) or fleet management.

As these platforms are most likely proprietary and lack detailed security specifications and a mature standardized framework, operators are forced to invest in advanced security solutions to protect data collected by the telematics platform and vehicles from cyberattacks.

Although the automotive telematics market is growing fast, owners of connected cars are afraid to actually use their connected services. According to a survey released by Kelley Blue Book in 2016, 62 percent of U.S. consumers worry that cars will be easily hacked in the future.

Automotive telematics security solutions by Rohde & Schwarz Cybersecurity now enable mobile network operators to establish a second line of defense, addressing the security needs of carriers in a cost-effective way. The solution portfolio includes:

•       The deep packet inspection (DPI) engine R&S PACE 2, which can be implemented as a state-of-the-art security function into IoT telematics platforms. R&S PACE 2 provides protocol and application classification in order to extract a variety of metadata from IP based traffic.

•       The next-generation firewall R&S Specialized Line that is powered by R&S PACE 2 and enables telematics platform operators to define policies based on communication primitives such as the types of OTA functions (e.g. deactivation of GPS tracking to support car theft). The firewall can be smoothly integrated into mobile networks via its routing functionalities and the easy and fast integration of special or proprietary protocols.

The Rohde & Schwarz Cybersecurity deep packet inspection technology makes it possible to implement semantic awareness into core network components such as firewalls, gateways and IoT platforms. This enables operators to provide a secure and reliable platform in order to leverage the full potential of automotive telematics.
