Hillcrest Labs Powers ALCATEL ONETOUCH’s Smartwatch with Advanced Sensor Hub for Context Awareness and Activity Tracking

Rockville, MD — January 6, 2015 — Hillcrest Labs today announced that ALCATEL ONETOUCH, one of the leading mobile phone brands, has licensed Hillcrest’s patented Freespace(R) software to provide advanced sensor-based functionality on ALCATEL ONETOUCH’s WATCH smartwatch.

Specifically, Hillcrest’s Freespace MotionEngine(TM) software powers a sensor hub that provides always on context awareness, activity tracking and intuitive gesture recognition functionality. Hillcrest’s software extends the battery life with context aware power savings, simplifies the user experience, and enables users to effortlessly track their daily fitness-related activities, such as walking and running. ALCATEL ONETOUCH’s WATCH will be available in various markets worldwide.

“ALCATEL ONETOUCH is one of the fastest growing global brands in the mobile industry, and we’re excited they chose Hillcrest to bring improved sensor processing to this impressive and fashionable new wearable device,” said Chad Lucien, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Hillcrest Labs. “Together, we’ll deliver the best wearable device user experience with accurate activity tracking, extended battery life and other advanced functionality optimized for a wrist-worn wearable.”

“Hillcrest provides unique expertise in sensor processing software that is necessary to deliver advanced, always on features for the fast-growing wearable market,” said William Dowie, Global Portfolio Director of ALCATEL ONETOUCH. “We look forward to leveraging Hillcrest’s software to enable more intuitive and exciting sensor-based use cases for our customers.”

Sensor functions play a key role in wearable devices and the quality of the sensor processing is critical to the user experience of the device. Hillcrest has used its extensive sensor processing experience to create the best user experiences for wearable devices. This includes accurate health and fitness tracking, with more reliable step tracking, as well as detecting whether the user is walking, running or stationary. Additionally, it provides more reliable recognition of gestures such as tap, shake and twist, to help solve the limited interface issue that can affect some wearable devices, such as whether the user is looking at the watch face or not.

Hillcrest has a commanding worldwide intellectual property portfolio that includes over 110 granted out of over 220 total filed patents exclusively owned by Hillcrest Labs. This includes patents which are critical to the orientation compensation, automatic calibration and intelligent motion stabilization features that ensure motion control technology is simple and intuitive to use.
