Elliptic Labs Launches First Multi Layer Interaction Making Mobile Devices More Intuitive to Use

San Francisco, CA and CEATEC, Japan – October 6, 2014 – Elliptic Labs, the leader in ultrasonic touchless gesturing for consumer electronic devices, today announced a market first; “Multi Layer Interaction.” It enables mobile devices to display different content depending on the location and distance a user’s hand is from a device. Visitors to CEATEC Japan, October 7-11 will have a chance to try out the technology live for the first time at the Murata booth #6K197. See video.

“The new Multi Layer Interaction brings users the latest advance in intuitive device interactions. Without touching the device, as your hand moves towards your phone for example, the screen lights up and information is displayed. As you continue to move your hand closer, different information is revealed. It’s all about improving the user experience and by presenting easier ways to interact with mobile devices,” said Elliptic Labs CEO Laila Danielsen. “Our new Multi Layer Interaction makes it faster to work with applications you use repeatedly during the day, such as checking messages, playing games, navigating maps, interacting with social media, and watching videos.”

With this new capability, manufacturers can build mobile devices that offer a more intuitive navigation experience and quicker interactions. Multi Layer Interaction enhances the most popular interactions with a minimum amount of effort. Manufacturers can also create entirely new ways to interact with portable devices; it can even be used to wake up a device – even when the main application processor is sleeping. “As your hand moves towards the screen, previously hidden options appear and you know intuitively what to do”, noted Danielsen.

“We share Elliptic’s vision for creating products that enhance the way people interact with consumer electronics. We are excited to partner with Elliptic to deliver natural touchless gesture capabilities to our customers,” said, Satoshi Sonoda, Senior Vice President, Device Business Unit at Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd.

With Elliptic Labs’ gesture recognition technology the entire zone above and around a mobile device becomes interactive and responsive to the smallest gesture. The active area is 180 degrees around the device, and up to 50 cm with precise distance measurements made possible by ultrasound. Elliptic Labs delivers the largest interaction space for consumer electronic devices while using very low power. The interaction space can also be customized by device manufacturers or software developers according to user requirements.

The company’s new software developer kit (SDK) allows OEMs to cost-effectively integrate intuitive and consumer-friendly touchless gesturing into their devices. The SDK is available immediately through sales@ellipticlabs.com.

About Elliptic Labs (www.ellipticlabs.com)

Elliptic Labs’ ultrasonic technology provides 3D touchless gesturing for consumer devices, creating more intuitive ways for users to navigate content and access information. The technology can be integrated in all-in-one PCs, laptops, tablets, smartphones and wearables. Ultrasound offers the best combination of high resolution, 180-degree interaction space, and low power consumption compared to camera or other sensing technologies. Elliptic Labs uses an ultra-low power audio SoC for ultrasound processing such as Wolfson audio hubs and has formed partnerships with Murata Manufacturing and Wolfson Microelectronics. Elliptic Labs is a privately held company with offices in San Francisco California, Shanghai China and Oslo, Norway. For more information, visit: www.ellipticlabs.com
