Rohde & Schwarz T&M equipment adopted by Renesas for R&D, conformance test and production of IEEE 802.11p devices

The IEEE 802.11p standard is one of the main candidates for vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications. Rohde & Schwarz T&M equipment enables semiconductor manufacturer Renesas to provide first class communications solutions for the 11p market.

Munich, May 2, 2017 — Development of wireless, automated communications between traffic participants will continue in order to improve road safety. At present, various wireless technologies are under discussion for implementing vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications. IEEE 802.11p (11p) is one of the promising candidates. Rohde & Schwarz already supports the automotive industry with a wide range of test and measurement (T&M) solutions for 11p. Semiconductor manufacturer Renesas Electronics Corporation is relying on these test solutions when developing, manufacturing and conformance testing its devices in line with IEEE 802.11p.

Design of 11p devices with R&S FSW and R&S SMW

For analyzing 11p transmitter signals and receiver measurements in the development phase, Renesas is using the R&S FSW high-end signal and spectrum analyzer and the R&S SMW200A vector signal generator with fading capability. The test setup offers outstanding RF performance for development and quality acceptance testing. The integrated fading capability of the R&S SMW200A provides a unique, smart testing environment in line with the IEEE 802.11p standard.

RF conformance testing with R&S TS-ITS100

Renesas has adopted the R&S TS-ITS100 RF conformance test system that is specifically designed for standard-compliant testing of components for vehicle-to-vehicle applications and intelligent transport systems (ITS) in line with IEEE 802.11p. This first fully automated test system can be used throughout the entire value chain – from R&D to precompliance and compliance testing. Using the well-established R&S CONTEST sequencer software, which was especially developed for RF conformance tests, the R&S TS-ITS100 makes it possible to verify compliance with regional standards such as ETSI EN 302 571 in the EU, IEEE 802.11-2012 in the USA and the ARIB standard in Japan. The test system also covers specific performance tests as defined by the Car-2-Car Communication Consortium (C2C-CC).

Production testing with R&S CMW100

For production testing of 11p devices, Renesas has chosen the R&S CMW100 production testing platform. The turnkey solution is based on the R&S CMWrun software and streamlined to meet Renesas requirements. The R&S CMW100 offers a highly integrated testing concept for fully automated production environments. The platform is silent, fast, optimized for high yield and features low energy consumption.
