RTI and Esterel Technologies Collaborate with Wind River to Address Critical Software Development Challenges for Avionics Systems

March 8, 2011–Real-Time Innovations (RTI), The Global Leader in DDS, and Esterel Technologies, the leading worldwide provider of model-based development solutions for critical systems and software, today announced an important collaboration with Wind River, a world leader in embedded and mobile software. The companies will develop educational sessions that address the challenges of developing and certifying critical avionics software in Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA).

The educational sessions will allow the three companies to demonstrate integration between their avionics products. Esterel’s modeling and safety certified code generation tools, together with their recently enhanced system integration capabilities, create code that runs on Wind River’s time-and space-partitioned VxWorks 653 operating system platform. RTI’s Data Distribution Service (DDS) middleware provides the software data bus that allows discrete subsystems to communicate.

“COTS technology is advancing to help reduce the cost and risk of software development for safety-critical deployments,” said David Barnett, vice president of Products and Markets at RTI. “We believe this type of collaboration is the vanguard of commercial solutions for this challenging area of systems integration.”

The first public demonstration and technical presentation of this new integration will be at Avionics and Defence Electronics Europe 2011 in Munich, Germany on March 16, 2011. In a two hour technical Masterclass, the companies will show their product integration for IMA by connecting multiple applications of different criticality on a shared multi-core hardware platform.

“This demonstration with Esterel and RTI will show how customers can rapidly integrate diverse platforms in multiple configurations of VxWorks 653,” said Chip Downing, senior director of aerospace and defense at Wind River. “Our combined efforts demonstrate the promise of ease and flexibility in modeling, integrating and deploying complex safety-critical avionics applications in next generation multi-core platforms using proven industry standards such as ARINC 653.”

”Our SCADE modeling system enables users to create safety-certifiable code that takes advantage of partitioning and other critical features in ARINC 653,” said Jakob Gartner, vice president of expertise and support at Esterel. “RTI’s solution for VxWorks 653 allows easy integration of subsystems, exploiting multiple partitions and cores. The pairing of the two is very powerful, enabling rapid development and deployment of applications that fully utilize the features of VxWorks 653.”
