80VIN/80VOUT, Constant Voltage, Constant-Current DC/DC Converter

MILPITAS, CA – May 26, 2010 – Linear Technology announces the LT3956, an 80V high-side current sense DC/DC converter designed to operate as a constant-current and constant-voltage regulator. It is ideal for driving high current LEDs as well as charging batteries and supercaps. Its 4.5V to 80V input voltage range makes it ideal for a wide variety of applications, including automotive, industrial and architectural lighting. The LT3956 uses an internal N-channel MOSFET and can drive up to eighteen 350mA white LEDs from a nominal 12V input, delivering in excess of 25 Watts. It incorporates a high-side current sense, enabling use in boost, buck, … Read More → "80VIN/80VOUT, Constant Voltage, Constant-Current DC/DC Converter"

Samplify Finds a Sweet Spot

They always want more data.

They want more data, faster, for less power, and at a lower cost.

Their appetite seems insatiable.

…which is pretty lucky for us, as electronics engineers.  Otherwise, we’d have worked ourselves out of jobs years ago.  We thrive on the continual demand for bigger, faster, cheaper, cooler pipes.  The main weapon in our tool chest?  Moore’s Law – an exponential power tool booster rocket that allows us to constantly do more to more with less for less.  Got a problem … Read More → "Samplify Finds a Sweet Spot"

A Trip Across the Tracks

180 mA.

Simple. One number. 180.

The maximum current draw of a bipolar technology PAL16L8A in a 20-pin CERDIP or plastic SKINNY-DIP package across the commercial operating range.

You wanna know how much current must be sourced? Easy. 180 mA. Period.

Ah… those were the days. We were so innocent back then. Somewhere along the way some marketing guy noticed that, especially with the new-fangled CMOS technology, PLD power consumption varied with the pattern in the device. And that was the start of the slippery slope.

We went from “here’ … Read More → "A Trip Across the Tracks"

Whither Embedded

In this second installment of our big embedded-executive brain dump, we delve a bit more into the pros and cons of multicore processors and multiprocessor systems, but also take a look at programming languages and customer trends. Here’s what’s happening.

All four participants agreed that the first multicore project is the hardest. “Moving from one core to two cores is the biggest step,” said CriticalBlue’s CEO David Stewart. “After that, four, eight, even thirty-two cores is a … Read More → "Whither Embedded"
