Adept Alternative

In many markets, there is what marketers call a “gorilla” – a company with a commanding market share that controls the way the ball rolls in that particular segment.  In HDL simulation for FPGAs, one could argue that ModelSim from Mentor Graphics has historically been the gorilla – with a dominant market share and OEM deals with most of the major FPGA vendors that allow them to be the first simulator out of the box when new designers start working on an FPGA design.

Aldec, Inc. has … Read More → "Adept Alternative"

Flexible Friends

Exactly ten years ago I was helping Adaptive Silicon, a start-up, with their European marketing. The company had a great pedigree, with roots in National Semiconductor and financial and process support from LSI Logic and financial and tools support from Synplicity. (For new readers – LSI Logic is now LSI Corporation and is no longer an ASIC company, as it was then. Synplicity was an independent company supplying EDA tools for FPGAs and is now part of Synopsys.)

The product was an FPGA technology for integration into ASICs and SoCs. The idea was … Read More → "Flexible Friends"

PowerPC: Twenty Years of Progress

They say power corrupts, but nobody told embedded-systems designers. The PowerPC processor family turns 20 years old this year, and it’s come a very long way from its beginnings in the first Power Macintosh in 1990. Today’s PowerPC has done a 180-degree turnaround: it’s no longer in Macs or any other desktop computers, but it’s going strong in embedded applications, especially networking and consumer electronics. PowerPCs are found in everything from spacecraft to Cisco routers to Ford and Jaguar engines to video games, including the “big three” … Read More → "PowerPC: Twenty Years of Progress"
