Synopsys Power-Aware Test Speeds Time to Volume Production at Realtek

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ — Synopsys, Inc. (Nasdaq: SNPS), a world leader in software and IP for semiconductor design, verification and manufacturing, today announced that Realtek Semiconductor Corporation, one of the world’s leading network and multimedia IC providers, deployed Synopsys power-aware test to avoid power issues during test and accelerate production testing of its new digital media processor.  Excessive power consumption during manufacturing test leads to overheating, IR drop, and other effects that can cause devices to fail, impacting profitability and delaying production ramp.  Designers at Realtek avoided these issues by reducing the device power consumption … Read More → "Synopsys Power-Aware Test Speeds Time to Volume Production at Realtek"

A New Angle

We don’t often stray from the realm of the electric in this space. But our electrical phenomena take place in physical materials, and we house them in other physical materials, and, as we ascend from the domain of the quantum, at some point, the physical features get large enough to where we can not only imagine them, but actually see them.

And, with increasing attempts to use elaborate packaging schemes to achieve more than Moore legislated, we keep getting dragged back out of the electrical and into the mechanical.

We did that earlier … Read More → "A New Angle"

Patently Obvious

“He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his candle at mine, receives light without darkening me.” – Thomas Jefferson

Remember Don Larsen? He was the first pitcher to throw a no-hitter during a World Series game. That was in 1956. In fact, until two weeks ago, he was the only pitcher to ever throw a no-hitter in any postseason game.

How about Michael Phelps, the only person to win 14 Olympic gold medals? Before he’d accomplished that feat, … Read More → "Patently Obvious"

Faster Yield Ramp at Sub-100-nm Technologies Using Design-Centric Volume Diagnostics Approach

At process nodes below 100 nanometers (nm), achieving yield ramp becomes both more critical and a greater challenge for semiconductor manufacturers. New manufacturing steps, materials and device types, coupled with escalating process variations and a host of other challenges, continually increase the difficulty in device scaling.  At the same time, growing market pressures are further squeezing already tight development and delivery windows.  In this environment, there’s no room for error in yield learning; devices that don’t yield the first time spell doom for chipmakers, who must get to yield ramp as quickly as possible.</ … Read More → "Faster Yield Ramp at Sub-100-nm Technologies Using Design-Centric Volume Diagnostics Approach"

Synchronous Boost Controller with up to 98% Efficiency Eliminates Heat Sink

MILPITAS, CA – October 25, 2010 – Linear Technology Corporation announces the LTC3786, a synchronous step-up DC/DC controller that replaces the boost diode with a high efficiency N-channel MOSFET. This eliminates the heat sink normally required in medium to high power boost converters. In applications where the input voltage may exceed the regulated output voltage, the LTC3786 is able to keep the synchronous MOSFET on continuously so … Read More → "Synchronous Boost Controller with up to 98% Efficiency Eliminates Heat Sink"
