Nordic Semiconductor launches HomeKit solution for nRF51 Series Bluetooth Smart SoCs

Oslo, Norway – June 16, 2015 – Ultra low power (ULP) RF specialist Nordic Semiconductor ASA (OSE: NOD) today announced the availability of its HomeKit solution for the nRF51 Series Bluetooth® Smart SoCs. Meeting the HomeKit technical specifications the complete solution offers simplified development and accelerated time to market for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch enabled connected home products.

The new SDK combined with the nRF51 Series Bluetooth Smart SoCs provides developers with a unique solution for HomeKit products that meets all requirements on size, power consumption and performance. A highly optimized solution, it enables single chip implementations, running HomeKit Accessory Protocol (HAP) and application firmware on the same chip. Designed for ultra-low power, it is the ideal solution for battery powered HomeKit products like door locks and thermostats. With the nRF51 SDK for HomeKit, Nordic is expanding the reach of its nRF51 Series Bluetooth Smart SoCs into the next generation of connected home products.

Released with iOS 8 last year, HomeKit is a framework for the creation of products and apps that will give a secure and consistent user experience when using an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to interact with smart products in our homes. Such products could include LED lighting control, climate control and other household appliances. HomeKit supports voice control via Siri and HomeKit enabled apps.

“Nordic is extremely proud to be offering this SDK to developers and to be giving them the opportunity to make nRF51 Series based HomeKit products for use with any iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. HomeKit will offer consumers a consistent experience with smart products in their homes and will also offer them complete peace of mind with regards to security concerns,” comments Geir Langeland, Nordic Semiconductor’s Director of Sales and Marketing.

Danish firm Poly-Control has developed the innovative and stylish keyless door lock system – Danalock. “We have been delighted by what we have achieved with the nRF51822 SoC and this SDK. With the nRF51822 it is possible to implement a complex Bluetooth Smart door lock system for HomeKit using a single chip solution. It has also exceeded our expectations for ultra-low power consumption,” says Henning Overgaard, CEO Poly-Control.

The nRF51 SDK for HomeKit is available now to verified MFI Licensees.
