Artesyn SharpMedia 2U Platform Enables Higher Density Voice and Video Services

Artesyn Embedded Technologies today announced the SharpMedia™ 2U Platform, a carrier grade media processing acceleration appliance that enables communications service providers to add high density voice and video processing to their networks using a standard rack server architecture. Applications such as session border controller, media gateway, media resource function, video/content optimization, WebRTC voice, network video conferencing and interactive voice and video response can now scale to meet consumers’ increasing demands while reducing power and space requirements.

The SharpMedia 2U Platform uses Octasic digital signal processors (DSPs) scalable from 4 to 48 across four PCI Express cards to provide a high performance voice and video processing engine, supported by single or dual Intel® Xeon® E5-2600 host processors. Artesyn’s comprehensive voice and video processing firmware and a programmers interface simplifies development*.

Linsey Miller, director of marketing for server acceleration, Artesyn Embedded Technologies, said: “As carriers tackle the challenges of increasing bandwidth demands while maintaining average revenue per user (ARPU), a more efficient and cost-effective network transcoding engine is required. The SharpMedia 2U Platform addresses this constraint by packaging Artesyn’s embedded voice and video expertise into a rack server appliance that is easy to integrate with multiple applications and simple to deploy.”

A single SharpMedia 2U Platform could provide over 30,000 channels of standard voice gateway transcoding (G.711/G.729AB), over 20,000 wireless voice channels (G.711/AMR NB), and over 1,500 channels of mobile video transcode (MPEG4 CIF/H.264 CIF) or 24 HD video conference bridges.

The SharpMedia 2U Platform is complemented by Artesyn’s system integration services, which allow for integration of Artesyn and third-party cards, software and branding in order to streamline customer deployment.

* Separate CODEC licenses may be required.
