Curtiss-Wright Controls Introduces 2nd Generation Intel® Core™i7-based 6U OpenVPX™ Single Board Computer

SAN DIEGO, CA – March 7, 2011 — Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing (CWCEC), a business group of Curtiss-Wright Controls and a leading designer and manufacturer of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) VME, and OpenVPX™ products for the rugged deployed aerospace and defense market, has introduced the new VPX6-1956 high performance rugged 6U OpenVPX single board computer (SBC). The VPX6-1956 is the third recently announced product in CWCEC’s family of boards based on Intel®’s new Core™ i7-next-generation quad-core processor, joining the CHAMP-AV8 6U OpenVPX DSP engine and the 3U OpenVPX VPX3-1256 SBC. The VPX6-1956 speeds and simplifies the integration of advanced processor systems for deployed harsh environment military applications.

“The VPX6-1956 combines the most advanced Intel processor, the Intel® Core™ i7 next-generation quad-core processor, with the flexible, I/O rich, and high-bandwidth advantages of the 6U OpenVPX board architecture,” said Lynn Bamford, vice president and general manager of Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing.  “With Intel’s Embedded Computer Group’s commitment to long life-cycle supply, this advanced low-power processing engine will drive a new generation of higher performance and power efficient compute intensive applications.”

The VPX6-1956 is a full featured 6U OpenVPX SBC, designed for harsh-environment, air and conduction-cooled aerospace and defense applications.  Each of the Core™ i7’s four cores delivers 2.1GHz of performance, providing advanced Intel® Architecture processing on the increasingly popular 6U OpenVPX form factor.

With a wide complement of on-board I/O, Gen2 PCI Express® (PCIe), Serial RapidIO® (S-RIO) and XMC/PMC expansion, the VPX6-1956 satisfies the most demanding fielded applications from unmanned aerial and ground vehicles, tactical aircraft, and armored vehicles to rugged naval systems.

Available in a full range of air- and conduction-cooled configurations, the rugged VPX6-1956 combines the significantly improved floating-point performance of the recently introduced Intel® Core™ i7 processor with the substantial bandwidth and system-enabling features of the 6U OpenVPX form factor. The board’s quad-core processor features Intel’s newest 256-bit Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX) floating-point instructions, and delivers unmatched performance.  The VPX6-1956 is available with up to 16GB of high-bandwidth DDR3 SDRAM (1333 MHz) and comes with a rich complement of high-speed I/O, including dual Gigabit Ethernet (GbE), Gen2 PCIe, S-RIO, four (4) USB 2.0 ports, and dual XMC/PMC sites supported with x8 PCIe Gen2.

The board’s integral high-speed GbE, PCIe fabric, S-RIO, and XMC/PMC mezzanine module connectivity enable high bandwidth data flows. Data can also flow from the VPX backplane to the XMC site per Vita 46.9 to support demanding high bandwidth applications such as the acquisition, processing and distribution of video, radar, and sonar sensor data.
