Semtech Launches 2.5G FTTR Chipset for Next-Generation PON Networks

Comprehensive 2.5G symmetric FTTR chipset delivers cost efficiency breakthroughs for expanding fiber-to-premises deployments

SHENZHEN, China and CAMARILLO, Calif., September 9, 2025 – Semtech Corporation (Nasdaq: SMTC), a leading provider of high-performance semiconductor, Internet of Things (“IoT”) systems and cloud connectivity service solutions, today announced its comprehensive 2.5G symmetric Fiber to the Room (FTTR) chipset designed to accelerate global Passive Optical Network (PON) deployments. The integrated solution addresses critical cost and performance challenges as the FTTR market prepares for significant growth driven by expanding fiber-to-premises deployments.

As fiber networks extend deeper into premises to eliminate Wi-Fi dead zones and support bandwidth-intensive applications, service providers face mounting pressure to deliver cost-effective solutions. Drawing on decades of carrier-grade PON experience, Semtech’s chipset now enables the industry transition from asymmetric 1.25G/2.5G systems to true symmetric 2.5G FTTR deployments.

This transition is gaining momentum globally as governments prioritize broadband infrastructure investment. Dell’Oro Group’s Broadband Access & Home Networking 5-Year July 2025 forecast projects PON equipment revenue growing to $12.6 billion by 2029, driven largely by XGS-PON deployments in North America and Europe, as well as 50 Gbps and FTTR adoption in China.

Comprehensive Integration Drives Cost Leadership 

Semtech’s 2.5G FTTR solution addresses the fundamental economics challenge facing FTTR deployments through purpose-built integration that eliminates the cost penalties of repurposed Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) chipsets.

  • GN25L42 2.5G OLT Super TIA: Revolutionary resetless burst mode transimpedance amplifier for Master FTTR Units (MFU), works with low-cost PIN photodiodes to meet sensitivity requirements of FTTR Ra and Rb standard. Integrated burst mode RSSI output significantly reduces component costs and production setup time when used as a chipset alongside the GN25L83 OLT combo.
  • GN25L83 Symmetric 2.5G OLT Combo: Combined 2.5Gbps laser driver and burst mode limiting amplifier (combo) completes the chipset for 2.5G MFUs. Featuring an optimized dual rate 2.5/1.25Gbps burst mode limiting amplifier with integrated burst mode RSSI support to enable simple and low-cost diagnostics reporting of receiver input power. Programmable Rx equalization optimizes performance and sensitivity to -31dBm, delivering the reliability essential for MFU applications.
  • GN25L70 Symmetric 2.5G ONU Combo: Combined 2.5G burst mode laser driver and limiting amplifier (combo) for 2.5G sub-FTTR units (SFU) designed for long-lead through-hole PCB Bidirectional Optical Sub-Assembly (BOSA) optics, uses low-cost CMOS to eliminate costly flex PCB requirements and reducing overall system costs.

The chipset development benefits from Semtech’s active participation in ITU PON and CCSA standards development, promoting compatibility and adaptability for evolving FTTR requirements.

The complete chipset solution is available now for sampling, enabling customers to begin development of next-generation FTTR systems that will define the global premises fiber landscape.
