RS Components Announces Availability of Bluetooth® Low Energy IoT Development Kit from ON Semiconductor

Development platform based on industry’s lowest power Bluetooth Low Energy radio offers modular sensing and control options plus ready-to-use sample code

LONDON, UK, 5 March 2019 – RS Components (https://uk.rs-online.com/web/) (RS), the trading brand of Electrocomponents plc (LSE: ECM), a global multi-channel provider of industrial and electronic products and solutions, is now offering the Bluetooth Low Energy IoT Development Kit (B-IDK) from ON Semiconductor. Based on the industry’s lowest power Bluetooth Low Energy radio System-on-Chip (SoC), the modular platform is well suited to designers developing IoT applications with extended battery life including smart appliances, asset trackers, wearables, and smart lighting.

The ON Semiconductor RSL10 SoC (https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/radio-frequency-development-kits/1814231) is the industry’s lowest-power Bluetooth 5 certified radio, optimised for Bluetooth Low Energy applications. Featuring an Arm® Cortex-M3® core, and a low power DSP and a 2.4 GHz transceiver, its peak receive power is 7 mW and its “deep sleep” consumption when inactive is just 62.5 nW. Designed for use with 1.2 and 1.5 V batteries, the RSL10 accepts a voltage supply range between 1.1 and 3.3 V without requiring a DC/DC converter.

The B-IDK is a modular node-to-cloud IoT platform for development of Bluetooth Low Energy applications. It comprises an RSL10 baseboard (BDK-GEVK) and is supported by a range of modular sensor and actuator hardware options. The intuitive and easy-to-use Integrated Development Environment (IDE) and software featuring several examples enables rapid development of many IoT use cases. The BDK-GEVK comes with a configurable mobile app that controls the sensors and actuators. The app also supports cloud connectivity, allowing MQTT publishing of and subscribing to sensor/actuator data via AWS™, Azure™, IBM Cloud™, or custom cloud services.

Sensor options for use with the BDK-GEVK include Ambient Light, Inertial and Environment (ALS/IMU/ENV), proximity and motion, and touch/level. Higher-power control options come in the form of actuator daughter cards that plug into the baseboard via ON Semiconductor’s BDK-DCDC-GEVB DC power adaptor. They include a power ballast with dual LED driver, a stepper motor controller, and a brushless DC motor controller.

The B-IDK software includes the CMSIS (Cortex Microcontroller Software Interface Standard) vendor-independent development pack for the Arm Cortex-M processor series. The package provides detailed documentation and ready-to-use sample code for several use cases.

The ON Semiconductor Bluetooth IoT Development Kit (B-IDK) is available now from RS in the EMEA and Asia Pacific regions.

Traditional verification methods are failing today's complex IC designs, which require a proactive, early-stage analysis approach. A shift-left methodology addresses IP block integration challenges and the limitations of traditional simulation and ERC tools. Insight Analyzer detects hard-to-find leakage issues across power domains, enabling early analysis without full simulation. Identify inefficiencies earlier to reduce rework, improve reliability, and enhance power performance.
