RS Components adds new ultra-low-power Renesas Synergy™ S1JA microcontroller

Delivering built-in analogue capability and security functions, new Synergy MCU is aimed at industrial instrumentation and IoT sensor devices

LONDON, UK, 18 December 2018 – RS Components (RS), the trading brand of Electrocomponents plc (LSE: ECM), a global multi-channel distributor, today announced it is shipping a new Renesas (https://uk.rs-online.com/web/b/renesas-electronics/) Synergy™ ultra-low-power microcontroller that simplifies designs for a wide range of industrial applications including instrumentation, multisensory systems, headless medical monitors, and single-phase electrical meters.

The R7FS1JA783A01CFM Synergy MCU (https://uk.rs-online.com/web/c/semiconductors/processors-microcontrollers/microcontrollers/?searchTerm=R7FS1JA) is based on a 48MHz Arm® Cortex®-M23 processor core with 256KB code flash and 32KB SRAM memory. The MCU features enhanced programmable analogue and security functions for high-accuracy sensor signal acquisition and conditioning. Integrating a 16-bit ADC, 24-bit sigma-delta ADC, 12-bit DAC, op amps, and high-speed and low-power comparators, the MCU’s built-in analogue functionality can be configured to deliver basic functions or more complex analogue blocks. This capability enables developers to reduce BOM costs and PCB size by eliminating the use of discrete components.

Low power consumption is crucial to a wide range of industrial applications, as well as the development of IoT endpoint devices. Therefore, a major feature for the MCU is its ultra-low-power capability with a software standby mode that only consumes 500nA. This makes the device ideally suited to battery-operated applications that spend extended periods in sleep mode.

Another key feature of the R7FS1JA783A01CFM is the implementation of integrated security functions that enable the development of secure systems for connecting to the cloud without the need for external security devices or functions. For example, the MCU integrates an AES cryptography accelerator and a true random number generator, as well as various memory protection units.

Other important aspects of the device include capacitive-touch-enable pins that speed the development of touch-based HMI interfaces. In addition, the device’s memory mirror function enables the switching from one memory region to another with minimal software overhead, allowing developers to quickly implement over-the-air (OTA) updates.

The Renesas R7FS1JA783A01CFM Synergy MCU and TB-S1JA Target Board Kit is shipping now in the EMEA and Asia Pacific regions.
