AVX Releases New Vertical, Poke-Home, Wire-to-Board Connectors for Discrete 18–22AWG Wire

The new 00-9296 Series connectors deliver simple, robust, repeatable, & cost-effective wire terminations designed to replace hand-soldered connections & two-piece connectors in industrial, commercial, smart grid, & SSL applications with densely-populated PCBs

FOUNTAIN INN, S.C. (December 15, 2017) – AVX Corporation, a leading manufacturer and supplier of passive components and interconnect solutions, has extended its range of vertical wire-to-board (WTB) connector solutions with the release of the new 00-9296 Series single-position, vertical, top-entry, poke-home connectors for discrete 18–22AWG solid or stranded wire. The new 00-9296 Series connectors deliver simple, robust, repeatable, and cost-effective wire terminations designed to replace both labor-intensive and inconsistent hand-soldered connections, as well as costly, two-piece connector solutions in perpendicular, low-pin-count industrial, commercial, smart grid, and SSL applications with limited PCB space and conditions that make it difficult to achieve repetitive and reliable processes and maintain solder integrity.

Rated for a minimum of 600VAC and up to 8A, 00-9296 Series vertical, top-entry, WTB connectors feature a proprietary, single-beam, stamped and formed, pre-plated phosphor bronze box contact that maximizes board attachment strength, exhibits high-spring force and robust resistance against fatigue and corrosion, and securely captures and retains an 18–22AWG wire, delivering maximum electrical integrity. The series also features a minimized X-Y footprint that is 23% smaller than the next-smallest vertical poke-home solution from AVX to ease design-in on densely-populated boards; an integral, molded flange that replaces costly Kapton® tape and provides a generous vacuum pick-up point for automated SMT placement; and UL-approved, color-coded insulators that make it easy for users to match discrete wires for error-free termination in multiple-wiring applications.

This combination of characteristics and capabilities meets or exceeds those of two-piece connector solutions with higher component costs, as well as proves cost-effective in comparison to the total applied costs — including quality, process issues, and throughput — of hand-soldered connections. Specific applications that are especially well-suited to benefit from the price and performance value that the new 00-9296 Series connectors offer include: industrial machine controls, e.g., power supplies, motors, drives, solenoids, sensors, fans, and pumps; commercial building controls, such as security and fire sensors; smart grid meters, breakers, and panels; and SSL applications, including: LED drivers, fixtures, signage, and streetlights.

“The horizontal, poke-home, WTB connector market is saturated with companies like TE, Molex, WAGO, and dozens of Chinese manufacturers, but AVX is the far and away the leading supplier of vertical, poke-home, WTB connector products,” said Tom Anderson, connector product manager at AVX Interconnect. “The vertical market is currently dominated by a combination of hand-soldered connections, AVX connectors, and AVX STRIPT™ contacts, and the new 00-9296 Series further extends our vertical connector portfolio with simple, robust, and cost-effective 18–22AWG wire termination solutions ideal for a variety of cross-market applications with limited PCB space and conditions that make it difficult to achieve repetitive and reliable processes and maintain solder integrity.”

The new UL-certified 00-9296 Series single-position, vertical, top-entry, WTB connectors feature phosphor bronze contacts with lead-free tin-over-nickel plating, are rated for three cycles and a minimum of 600VAC, and are available with eight UL-approved insulator colors: brown, blue, yellow, red, green, orange, black, and white. Versions designed to accept 18AWG are rated for 8A, 20AWG versions are rated for 7A, and 22AWG versions are rated for 6A. Operating temperatures for the series extend from -40°C to +130°C, and parts are shipped packaged in pocket tape on reels in quantities of 1,250 parts per reel.
