Saelig Announces the PicoBNC+ NVH Diagnostics For Fast Automobile Noise and Vibration Fault Finding

The new VNH kit includes a 3-axis accelerometer data into a single channel for faster vehicle noise answers, especially designed for service technicians who want to diagnose NVH faults quickly, reliably and with confidence.

Saelig Co. Inc. has introduced the Pico Technology PicoBNC+ NVH Diagnostic Kits, consisting of a new, sensitive microphone (TA572), a 3-axis accelerometer (TA573), and extension lead (TA574) for connecting with a PicoScope automotive oscilloscope. This setup greatly helps in locating and identifying problematic, illusive sources of unwanted noise and vibration in vehicles, vessels, and rotating machinery. Noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) refers to the noise and vibration characteristics in vehicles, and includes noise (sound propagation), vibration (oscillations felt at certain frequencies), and harshness (the subjective discomfort from unpleasant sounds). Real-time diagnosis is provided to the technician in the form of a bar graph, a frequency chart, or a 3D frequency chart. Starting a test recording before commencing a road test for later playback and analysis ensures that a driver’s attention stays on the road.

Worn bearings, failing joints, suspension faults and powertrain imbalances can all cause unwanted noise and vibration that means expensive damage, warranty disputes, and operator dissatisfaction if left undiagnosed. The diagnostic challenge is that NVH issues are often intermittent and difficult to locate, with traditional approaches requiring multiple tests to diagnose a fault. Between test cycles, technicians have previously had to waste time reconfiguring probes and software settings.

The PicoBNC+ NVH 3-axis accelerometer captures fore-aft, lateral, and vertical vibration through one PicoScope channel. With four accelerometers and a four-channel PicoScope, a technician can capture 12 axes of vibration data in one test — enough to cover all four corners of a vehicle in a single road test. The same flexibility supports multi-point test configurations on rotating machinery and more complex powertrains. In addition, PicoScope’s automatic PicoBNC+ probe recognition reduces software setup time by identifying each probe on connection and applying the correct settings, removing the need to enter probe type or sensitivity values manually and eliminating a common source of configuration error. The new probes also offer improved measurement repeatability and lower noise compared to the previous BNC-connected NVH probes, giving technicians greater confidence in their results.

The kits are supplied with a key for the complementary NHV software for ease of display and diagnosis. When NVH tests point to a propshaft vibration, rebalancing on the vehicle is faster and cheaper than replacement. The software provides guidance through every step.

The Pico Technology PicoDiagnostics NVH Kits from Saelig are the cost-effective answer to the many NVH problems facing technicians today. They are available now in Starter, Standard and Advanced Kit configurations for automotive, commercial, construction, agricultural, marine and other fields. Made by Pico Technology, Europe’s award-winning test and measurement manufacturer, and whose automative oscilloscopes are used by the world’s major vehicle manufacturers, PicoDiagnostics NVH Kits are available now from Saelig Company, Inc. their USA technical distributor.
