STMicroelectronics Pushes MEMS Innovation in Smart Things, Smart Environments, and Smart Driving

Taipei, Taiwan, August 27, 2015 – STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), a global semiconductor leader serving customers across the spectrum of electronics applications, a top MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) manufacturer and the world’s leading supplier of MEMS for consumer and mobile applications, and a top-three supplier of automotive ICs, today announced that two of its executives will deliver keynote speeches at the SEMICON Taiwan 2015 MEMS Forum.

Benedetto Vigna, Executive Vice President and General Manager of ST’s Analog, MEMS and Sensors Group will talk about the enabling role of MEMS and Sensors in bringing to life Smart Things (Internet of Things, Wearables), Smart Environments (Smart Cities, Smart Industry, and Smart Home), and Smart Driving (Green and Connected Car). Edoardo Merli, Director of Marketing and Application for ST’s Automotive Product Group in Greater China & South Asia Region will delve deeper into the subject of Smart Driving and discuss the key concepts and technology building blocks that are enabling the Internet of Cars. 

According to the latest report from Semico Research, the global market for MEMS components that was worth $14.3 billion in 2014 will grow at a CAGR of 28.4% by 2018. This growth is set to take the MEMS market from about 12.4 billion units in 2013 to 43.3 billion units by 2018, driven by the rapid IoT expansion. 

“From the Nintendo Wii to smartphones, we have seen dramatic growth and change in the MEMS marketplace. We are far from exhausting the potential of existing MEMS applications; the best is yet to come. The next wave of MEMS development is moving toward actuation and, while the ripples from these beautiful little machines have been building slowly for years, as they converge with the Internet of Things, the ride is about to get more exciting,” said Benedetto Vigna. “Some examples of the next-wave applications include tiny mirrors that enable people to interact more naturally with technology; smaller, faster auto-focus solutions for cellphones; and new types of 3D print heads. 

“The growing popularity of IoT is pushing the boundaries of in-car connectivity towards advanced assisted-driving and self-driving cars,” said Edoardo Merli. “ST’s rich product portfolio is transforming the car of today to become a more sustainable, energy-efficient technology hub and a smart connected node that will deliver people to their destinations with greater safety and convenience.“
