Power-Management IC from STMicroelectronics Selected by Kingston for its HyperX® Savage Solid-State Drive

Taipei, Taiwan, July 16, 2015 – STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), a global semiconductor leader serving customers across the spectrum of electronics applications, today announced its 5-channel power-management IC (L7292) has been selected byKingston Technology Company, Inc., the independent world leader in memory products, for its enthusiast-class HyperX Savage solid-state drive (SSD). Compared with designs using low drop-out regulators (LDO) or other multi-channel power-management ICs, ST’s L7292 offers the highest level of integration, flexibility and programmability, and enables higher efficiency with compact and simplified PCB design.

HyperX Savage SSD combines ultra-fast read/write speeds and powerful multitasking with a low-profile, 7mm-slim form factor that fits in most notebooks, desktops, and home-theater PCs. The ST power-management IC inside HyperX Savage has been developed in the industry’s most advanced 0.16µm BCD[1] process technology, which allows the lowest Bill-of-Material cost through the full integration of all external components. The L7292’s design and IPs enable the highest DC/DC power-conversion efficiency together with the lowest quiescent current and its full programmability allows real-time control and rapid adaptation to any application needs.

”Whereas Solid-State Drives traditionally rely on standalone switching DC-DC converters, ST has pioneered the integration of power-management IC in SSD applications,” said Patrick Boulaud, Marketing and Application Vice President of ST’s Industrial, Power and Discrete Group in the Greater China and South Asia Region. “ST is the major supplier of power-management devices for the HDD and SSD applications and we will continue to invest in the storage domain offering a complete portfolio of products tailored to the SSD market needs.”

“We are proud to integrate STMicroelectronics’ L7292 power management IC in our latest HyperX SSD,” said David Chen, Director of Engineering, Kingston Technology. “Our engineers worked closely together to flawlessly integrate the ST solution into HyperX Savage, one of the market’s fastest SATA III-based SSDs.”

Technical Note:

The L7292 is a 5-channel switching buck management IC. It implements five switching buck power rails and is fully programmable through I2C interface. The programmability includes 5-channel power-on/off sequence/delay time and output voltage/current range. The IC embeds a 128-bit EEPROM memory and full-protection features such as ULVO, OCP, OVP, and thermal, and is available in the 5mm x 5mm VQFN40L package.
