Spansion and ISSI to Develop RAM Products based on Breakthrough Spansion HyperBus™ Interface

SUNNYVALE, Calif. and MILPITAS, Calif., Oct. 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Spansion Inc. (NYSE: CODE), a global leader in embedded systems solutions, and Integrated Silicon Solution, Inc. (NASDAQ: ISSI), a leader in advanced memory solutions, today announced plans to develop HyperRAM™ products based on the Spansion HyperBus™ interface, which dramatically improves performance while reducing the number of pins. Both companies will have rights to sell HyperRAM products under a long-term supply agreement fulfilled by ISSI.

By combining HyperFlash™ and HyperRAM components on a single bus, chipset providers can reduce controller pincount, accommodate smaller packages, simplify PCB designs, and potentially replace or reduce DRAM, resulting in significant cost savings while dramatically improving performance.

“This announcement builds on the growing momentum of our Spansion HyperFlash™ memory and will enable the creation of high-speed and cost-effective system solutions for our partners and customers,” said Robin Jigour, senior vice president of the Flash Memory Business at Spansion. “We look forward to working with ISSI to expand the adoption of the HyperBus interface and new memory products.”

Earlier this year, Spansion announced the HyperBus Interface and first product based on the Interface, Spansion HyperFlash NOR memory devices, with read throughput of up to 333 megabytes per second—more than five times the fastest Quad SPI flash currently available from other suppliers with one-third the number of pins of parallel NOR flash. The HyperBus Interface is being implemented broadly by leading system-on-chip (SoC) and microcontroller manufacturers.

ISSI is one of the leading suppliers to the Automotive and Industrial Markets with a broad portfolio of specialty DRAM, SRAM, flash and analog solutions. ISSI is well known for its high quality and long-term customer support.

“We are pleased to expand our partnership with Spansion. HyperRAM products will be a great addition to our portfolio, complementing and broadening our extensive family of SRAM, DRAM and flash solutions. The HyperBus Interface is revolutionary and will result in the development of a new class of high-performance memory products to service our automotive, industrial and medical customers,” said Lyn Zastrow, VP of ISSI  Automotive Business Unit .

Spansion and ISSI plan to release the first HyperRAM products in the first half of 2015 and will provide additional details at that time.

About Spansion HyperBus Interface

The efficient 12-pin Spansion HyperBus Interface consists of an 8-pin address/data bus, a differential clock (2 signals), one Chip Select and a Read Data Strobe for the controller, reducing the overall cost of the system. The Spansion HyperBus Interface enables a wide range of high-performance applications, such as automotive instrument clusters, infotainment / navigation systems, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), hand-held displays, digital cameras, projectors, factory automation, medical diagnostic equipment, and home automation and appliances.
