H.264/AVC Superior DCI 4K Support and 3D Full HD Video Processing Now in the Evatronix JPEG 2000 Encoder

Bielsko-Biala/Poland, October 27th, 2011 – Evatronix SA, the provider of multimedia IP solutions for complete video and audio applications, have announced the new generation of the JPEG 2000 encoder IP core. Thanks to its innovative multi-channel single-core architecture the controller is capable of seamless processing of DCI 4K or 3D Full HD quality images at the impressive rates of 24 (DCI 4K) or 50 (3D Full HD) frames per second.

The JPEG 2000 standard itself has been chosen by the Digital Cinema Initiatives, a joint venture of 7 major Hollywood studios, as the default video coding standard for digital cinema. Independent tests run on the DCI Standard Evaluation Material have proven the JPEG 2000 to be superior to the popular H.264/AVC standard when it comes to high definition video encoding, especially at resolutions exceeding 1920×1080 pixels of the Full HD format, like 4096×2048 pixels found in the DCI 4K standard.

The latest generation of the Evatronix JPEG 2000 IP supports color depths from 8 to 16 bits per image component and the following sub-sampling schemes:  4:4:4, 4:2:2, 4:2:0, 4:0:0. All these values can be set by the designer in a configuration script, together with dozen other parameters, like quantization style, decomposition level or entropy encoding mode.

The input image resolution might be set as high as 16K by 16K, which totals to the abundant value of more than 250 Megapixels. Depending on the desired output image quality, both lossless and lossy compression modes are available, and as are flexible tile and code-block sizes.

The Evatronix JPEG2000-4K encoder features the latest OCP 2.2 socket and a variety of system bus wrappers available on engineer’s request. Depending on the technology, the controller is capable of compressing data with the speed of up to 600 MSamples per second.

“The JPEG2000-4K is a testimony to our continuous commitment to provide the state-of-the-art multimedia IP cores,” said Marcin Zys, Multimedia Product Line Manager at Evatronix. “The innovative multi-channel single-core architecture significantly improves the image processing performance, while keeping the core capable of fitting into a medium-sized FPGA.”

Want early design analysis without simulation?

Sponsored by Siemens Digital Industries Software

Traditional verification methods are failing today's complex IC designs, which require a proactive, early-stage analysis approach. A shift-left methodology addresses IP block integration challenges and the limitations of traditional simulation and ERC tools. Insight Analyzer detects hard-to-find leakage issues across power domains, enabling early analysis without full simulation. Identify inefficiencies earlier to reduce rework, improve reliability, and enhance power performance.
