Avnet Electronics Marketing Americas Announces Winners of “Dog Days of Summer” Video Contest

PHOENIX—September 26, 2011  — The dog days of summer have finally come to an end; so too has the Avnet Electronics Marketing Dog Days of Summer Video Contest. Today, Avnet Electronics Marketing Americas, a business region of Avnet, Inc. (NYSE: AVT), announced the four winners of its video contest, after reviewing 45 entries submitted by design engineers from across the Americas.

A first-prize winner was selected from four categories. Each winner will each receive an Apple® iPad 2 for their winning entry. The winners are:

  • In the “communications” category is a video submitted by a husband and wife duo who use the YouTube alias scramjetx. Their video features a garage door opener app that works with an Android phone. This device uses a relay and MOSFET found on Avnet’s line card. The video can be seen here.
  • In the “transportation” category is a video submitted by Ben Corrado. His “upside down logger” design uses GPS to track the locations of where he’s been upside down, be it skiing or biking. Corrado’s design used an Avnet accelerometer.
  • In the “entertainment” category is a video that takes a new twist on an old game. The Karate Chop game was submitted by Alan Parekh and his daughter Alexis and uses the Avnet PIC16F1827 chip.
  • In the “solar” category is a video submitted by YouTube user SSublett1. This design featured a solar-powered CNC wood burner featuring microcontrollers and motor controllers from Avnet.

“This contest was such a fun way to show how the design community can truly innovate with the more than five million SKUs found on Avnet’s line card,” said Ian Basey, vice president of marketing, Avnet Electronics Marketing Americas. “We’d like to extend our congratulations to all the designers who won and give a huge thank you to all who participated.”
