SonicWALL Selects Cavium’s 32-Core OCTEON(R) II Processor to Deliver 240+Gbps of Security and Application Inspection in Next Generation Firewall Platforms

Cavium Networks (NASDAQ: CAVM), a leading provider of semiconductor products that enable intelligent processing for networking, communications, and the digital home, announced today a collaboration with SonicWALL, a leading provider of network security solutions, to deploy the Cavium Networks OCTEON II processor technology across a broad range of Next Generation Firewalls and enable unprecedented levels of security scalability, performance and application intelligence and control. This level of scalability is essential to address the demands of Next Generation Firewalls for the Enterprise and Cloud Computing environments.

Social networking and media-rich applications are introducing new security threats and driving massive increases in the throughput requirements of Next Generation Firewalls. As businesses increasingly deploy converged communications, Web 2.0 applications, and drive toward datacenter consolidation, they need massively-scalable platforms to keep up with the increased bandwidth as well as the exploding number and increasing sophistication of malware and other threats. It is no longer acceptable to choose between throughput or security — both are equally vital in next generation IT infrastructure.

Cavium Networks and SonicWALL are teaming together to provide comprehensive solutions with unprecedented compute performance, throughput, and scalability to address these needs. As a key element of the solution, SonicWALL is utilizing the Cavium Networks OCTEON II processor technology, with up to an industry-leading 32 deterministic, low-latency cnMIPS64 cores and over 40GHz per chip, highest performance per Watt, and revolutionary Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) acceleration, into a broad range of modular platforms. SonicWALL’s SuperMassive architecture scales near-linearly to up to 32 OCTEON II processors with 32 cores, to a total of 1024 cores delivering up to 640Gbps of real-world Next Generation Firewall performance with very low latency.

“We are pleased to expand our partnership with Cavium Networks and leverage the unprecedented performance of the OCTEON II technology to offer the industry leading scalability and application intelligent security platforms,” said Atul Dhablania, VP of Hardware Engineering and Worldwide Operations of SonicWALL. “OCTEON II also offers us seamless compatibility to easily transition our system and software designs from OCTEON Plus with rapid time to market.”

“Cavium Networks is excited that SonicWALL has chosen the OCTEON II to power and extend the throughput and capabilities of its next-generation enterprise security solutions to new levels,” said Rajiv Khemani, Chief Operating Officer of Cavium Networks.
