Sony’s PS4 controller might have touchscreen and biometric sensor

Sony and Microsoft are widely expected to go head-to-head once again with their next-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles. But a newly sprouted rumor indicates Sony could differentiate itself from its rivals with a controller that takes a few cues from the Wii U and PS Vita.

Sony’s “DualShock” analog controller for its three PlayStation consoles has remained mostly unchanged since 1997. (If it ain’t broken — right?) If a CVG’s report that a “senior games studio working on an upcoming Sony game” for the PlayStation 4 is to be believed, Sony’s experimenting with new controller form factors.

According to one CVG, prototype PS4 controllers with “biometric sensors on the grips and an LCD touchscreen” are floating around within Sony’s research and development department. Another CVG source also claims Sony is looking to “emulate the same user interface philosophies as the PS Vita.”

Want early design analysis without simulation?

Sponsored by Siemens Digital Industries Software

Traditional verification methods are failing today's complex IC designs, which require a proactive, early-stage analysis approach. A shift-left methodology addresses IP block integration challenges and the limitations of traditional simulation and ERC tools. Insight Analyzer detects hard-to-find leakage issues across power domains, enabling early analysis without full simulation. Identify inefficiencies earlier to reduce rework, improve reliability, and enhance power performance.
