Curtiss-Wright Controls Introduces New Secure Rugged SATA Solid State Drive XMC Card with Data Encryption and Instant Purge Features

OTTAWA, CANADA – December 3, 2010 – Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing (CWCEC), a business group of Curtiss-Wright Controls and a leading designer and manufacturer of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) VME, VPX, OpenVPX™ and CompactPCI products for the rugged deployed aerospace and defense market, has announced the introduction of the XMC-552, its new rugged, high-performance, reliable and power-efficient NAND flash solid state drive XMC/PMC card. The XMC/PMC-552, which is visible to the system as two independent SATA drives, is available in 64, 128 or 256 GB configurations. The small form-factor mezzanine card speeds and simplifies the integration of large capacity solid-state flash memory into deployed subsystems.

“The XMC/PMC-552 is ideally suited for rugged defense and aerospace applications,” said Lynn Bamford, vice president and general manager of Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing. “This high-density solid state drive provides advanced security features, including encryption and instant purge, to ensure that critical data remains protected.”

Designed for use in demanding military environments, the XMC-552 provides features to protect critical data including 128-bit AES data encryption using a programmable key, an instant purge function that enables the erasure of all memory within 4 seconds, and secure data erase. The sequential read performance of the XMC-552’s flash memory is rated at an industry- 200 MB per second, which can be increased to 400 MB per second with RAID 0 software. The card supports industry standard ECC NAND flash correction that can correct up to eight random single-bit errors per 512-byte sectors. It also supports a wear leveling algorithm that spreads program/erase cycles evenly across the media to mitigate premature device failure due to frequent data overwrites.

The XMC-552 is available in both air-cooled and conduction-cooled configurations. Designed in accordance with the IEEE 1386 and IEEE 1386.1 specifications, the card is designed for optimal performance with basecards that support either a full XMC mezzanine connector set (Pn5 and Pn6) or a mixed set PMC and XMC connectors (Pn4 and Pn5).

XMC-552 Performance Features

  •          XMC (VITA 42.3) and PMC (IEEE 1386.1) NAND flash storage device
  •          XMC: x8 PCIe
  •          PMC: 64-bit, 33/66/100/133 MHz PCIx, V1.3
