Wolfson audio and power management technology selected by Movidius for mobile 3D video and imaging platform

Edinburgh, UK and Dublin, Ireland, November 17 2010 – Wolfson Microelectronics plc has today announced that its industry-leading audio and power management technology has been selected by mobile multimedia processing specialist Movidius to deliver exceptional audio performance and power management to its pioneering Myriad 3D platform reference and development boards.

Movidius has incorporated Wolfson’s integrated power management subsystem, the WM8312, and Wolfson’s low-power, high-quality stereo codec, the WM8987, into its Myriad 3D mobile development system: the latest product in Movidius’ landmark mobile imaging and video portfolio.

Movidius’ Myriad 3D is the world’s first platform to be optimized out-of-the-box to enable a 3D experience in high definition (HD) on mobile devices, allowing handset designers to easily produce a whole new generation of 3D-enabled smartphones.

Part of Wolfson’s successful power management portfolio, the WM8312 provides a highly flexible single-chip solution for low-power portable applications, and is designed to operate as a system power management IC supporting a variety of industry-standard processors and accessories in a wide range of applications.

Wolfson’s WM8987 stereo codec device is designed for portable digital audio applications and integrates complete interfaces to stereo or mono microphones. External components are reduced as no separate microphone or headphone amplifiers are required, and its advanced on-chip digital signal processing performs equalization, 3D sound enhancement and automatic level control for the microphone or line input.

Wolfson’s audio and power management technology is also featured in reference designs for Movidius’ first Myriad 3D product, the recently announced MV1133. This silicon and software platform is capable of a range of unique 3D functions: the ability to preview, capture and process high-quality user generated 3D video and images on a mobile phone, converting any 2D video to 3D in real time, and upscaling and playback of content in HD.

Dr Jess Brown, Product Line Manager for Power Management at Wolfson Microelectronics, said, “As audio becomes a key differentiator in the mobile space, consumers now expect the standard of audio in their multimedia devices to match that of the imaging and video.  We are delighted that Movidius has chosen our technology to deliver outstanding audio performance and power management to its latest Myriad 3D mobile and video imaging product.”

David Moloney, CTO of Movidius said, “We selected Wolfson because of its reputation for providing world-class audio and power management capability.  Wolfson’s leading stereo device and power management subsystem, coupled with their globally renowned knowledge and expertise, made them the perfect choice for our latest Myriad 3D reference designs.”
