Pantech Selects Atmel maXTouch Solution To Power IZAR, VEGA and EASE Smartphones

San Jose, CA, September 13, 2010 – Atmel® Corporation (Nasdaq: ATML) a leader in microcontroller and touch solutions, today announced that Korea-based Pantech has selected the Atmel maXTouch™ solution to power the IZAR, VEGA and EASE touch-enabled smartphones. Leveraging Atmel maXTouch solutions, these new phones offer multi-touch interfaces on Android platforms.

The robust Atmel maXTouch solutions offer higher performance, true unlimited touch functionality, stylus support, better power consumption and faster response times for the user.

“Korean handset makers are continuing to develop smartphones that address the local and worldwide touch phones. The Atmel maXTouch solution has enabled us to push ahead of our competitors with better performance, faster response time and stylus support for character writing,” said Jung Hee Park, Principal Research Engineer, Pantech. “Pantech selected maXTouch solutions because of its proven performance to offer our users a better experience with our IZAR, VEGA and EASE smartphones.”

The Pantech IZAR supports the Android 2.1 platform (with options to upgrade to the Android platform 2.2), WiFi, Bluetooth and uses a T-DMB TV tuner for streaming mobile TV, while the VEGA, launched exclusively in Korea, is the lightest Android phone with a 3.7 display. The Pantech EASE includes a multi-touch screen and pull-out keyboard available with AT&T service.

Atmel maXTouch technology provides best-in-class configurability to exceed today’s user interface requirements. Advanced touchscreen functionality includes unlimited touches and rejection of unintended touches; stretch/pinch and rotate gestures; stylus support; handwriting and shape recognition, including face detection on mobile phones; grip suppression and palm rejection on MIDs and Netbook screens.
