Simplifying Multi-Rail Power Management for FPGA designers

Designers of today’s networking equipment are being pushed to increase the data throughput and performance of their systems, as well as add functionality and features that differentiate them from competitors. There is also pressure to decrease the overall power consumption while remaining the same physical size. And, everyone is “going green.” These systems require many ASICs, DSPs and processors with multiple voltage rails—line cards with 30 to 40 rail voltages are not uncommon.

In this Chalk Talk, Amelia Dalton will speak with Dave Clemens, Senior Applications Engineer with Linear Technology will discuss the unique features and easy to use GUI of the LTC2978 Digital Power Manager, which can manage multiple power supplies in complex systems, providing the user with power-consumption data and enabling smart energy-management decisions while protecting expensive FPGA, ASIC, DSP, and other processing ICs from damage.

The LTC2978 is an octal power supply monitor and controller with a PMBus interface and onboard EEPROM.  Eight channels can be monitored, supervised, margined and sequenced, each with its own warning and programmable OV/UV threshold pairs.
