Curtiss-Wright Controls Announces Gedae Software Development Support for CHAMP-AV6 DSP Engine

LEESBURG, VA – October 14, 2009, — Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing, a leading designer and manufacturer of rugged deployed commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) VME, VPX and CompactPCI products for the aerospace and defense market, has announced the availability of support for Gedae, Inc.’s Graphical Entry Distributed Application Environment (GEDAE) software development tool for multiprocessor DSP systems on its high bandwidth, highly rugged VPX form-factor CHAMP-AV6 DSP engine board. With support for GEDAE users can now run existing Gedae applications on the high-performance CHAMP-AV6, taking full advantage of the board’s advanced dual-core 8640 Power Architecture processor and high-bandwidth Serial RapidIO fabric based architecture.

“We are excited to bring support for Gedae’s software development tools to our high performance multiprocessor CHAMP-AV6 DSP engine,” said Lynn Patterson, vice president and general manager, Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing. “The combination of this advanced board and Gedae’s tools provides a powerful advantage to system integrators developing demanding signal processing applications. Our relationship with Gedae goes back many product generations. They have been a valued partner across the lifespan of our most high performance DSP board level products.”

“Gedae Inc.’s mission is to enable the effective use of multiprocessor and multicore hardware without specialized programming skills,” said Jeremy Lundgren, vice president and general manager, Gedae, Inc. “This ultimately reduces the gap between developmental and deployed hardware technology. The success of Gedae and Curtiss-Wright Controls’ joint customers is a testament to the technologies combined value.”

The development of the new Gedae Board Support Package (BSP) for the CHAMP-AV6 was greatly aided by use of Curtiss-Wright Controls’ IPC and Continuum Vector software tools. Because the previous CHAMP-AV4 Gedae BSP was developed using an earlier version of IPC, the development of the new SRIO-compatible BSP was simplified. The new CHAMP-AV6 Gedae BSP also makes use of optimized DSP functions in the Continuum Vector library.

Significant Performance Boost
Gedae recently participated with Curtiss-Wright Controls in a benchmarking study to compare performance of the CHAMP-AV6 and its predecessor the CHAMP-AV4. The study employed a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) algorithm with a distributed multi-processor 2D FFT, recognized as a good overall test of processing, and data communications performance. The results of the testing, to be published soon in a detailed white paper, showed a significant performance increase for the CHAMP-AV6, thanks both to its increased floating point processor performance and its use of a SRIO fabric architecture.

About Gedae
Gedae is an application development environment consisting of a language, compiler and thread scheduler. It also includes an automated build system and a tool suite supporting the development activities. The compiler is the central component of Gedae and automatically implements software for a single processor, multiprocessor, multicore or heterogeneous system. Because the Gedae compiler is aware of the multi-processor and the multi-core and memory architecture of the target, it automatically customizes the software to that architecture. As a result, its easy to port applications among processors. The Gedae language provides the compiler with information in a form that allows the compiler to automatically perform the most complex tasks, including threading the application, planning memory and implementing the distribution of the software.

About Gedae, Inc.
The mission of Gedae, Inc. is to reliably deploy to military personnel the most advanced technology available, which is achieved by automating software development technology. Modern systems at times rely on implementing system complexity in software. Gedae simplifies the development complexity to ultimately enhance the quality of the software.

Gedae, Inc. delivers a software development environment for multithread applications with its multithread compiler and a language also known as Gedae. The environment surrounds these core components with a suite of supporting tools to define and implement the threads. Gedae recognizes the architecture of the target and crafts a complex application, using simple software components: highly optimized vector and interprocessor communication routines. This automation means that organizations can build their software early and explore various architectures using simulations or real hardware never having to rewrite their software.
