Avnet Electronics Marketing Releases New Zynq-7000 All Programmable SoC/Analog Devices Intelligent Drives Kit II

PHOENIX—August 3, 2015—Avnet Electronics Marketing, an operating group of Avnet, Inc. (NYSE: AVT), today released the new Zynq®-7000 All Programmable SoC/Analog Devices Intelligent Drives Kit II. The kit is designed to provide a flexible platform for motor control and industrial networking development in sectors including industrial automation, smart energy, medical and embedded systems. This evolution of the original Zynq-7000 All Programmable SoC/Analog Devices Intelligent Drives Kit offers enhanced performance features including greater precision data converters from Analog Devices, higher frequency direct drive of the H-bridge power stages and simultaneous drive of two motors, including bipolar steppers or BLDC with electronic brake.

Based on the Avnet ZedBoard, the new Zynq Intelligent Drives Kit II combines the Xilinx Zynq-7000 All Programmable SoC and ARM®dual-core Cortex-A9 + 28nm programmable logic with the latest generation Analog Devices high-precision data converters and digital isolation to enable high performance motor control and industrial networking connectivity. Also included is a Xilinx Zynq-7000 reference design featuring Analog Devices Linux framework to provide an ideal infrastructure for quickly adding custom control algorithms. Model-Based Design for the Xilinx Zynq®-7000 All Programmable SoC is supported using Simulink® in combination with C/HDL code generation using Embedded Coder® and HDL Coder from MathWorks.

“Control systems engineers are turning to advanced algorithms to create more intelligent industrial drives that dramatically reduce power consumption while adhering to critical safety standards and prolonging equipment life,” said Matt Brown, technical marketing engineer, Avnet Electronics Marketing. “Combined with Xilinx Vivado®-based IP and a Linux infrastructure provided by Analog Devices, the ZIDK-II platform allows engineers to explore the power of an SoC for creating intelligent drives that require fast control loops and precision analog measurement, with the option to add industrial networking interfaces like Powerlink and EtherCAT.”

“The Zynq Intelligent Drives Kit II unleashes the unique capabilities of the Zynq® All Programmable SoCs on our new development platform that supports engineers who are researching algorithms by prototyping complete motor drive systems,” said Christoph Fritsch, director of the industrial, scientific and medical market segment at Xilinx. “The kit is enabled for system level design flows and allows fast exploration of architecture trade-offs between software and hardware implementations of highly sophisticated motor control applications.”

“MathWorks is pleased to continue our collaboration with Avnet, enabling customers to use Model-Based Design to simulate, prototype and deploy custom motor controllers for Zynq-based platforms,” said Eric Cigan, strategic partner manager for MathWorks.

“The Analog Devices AD-FMCMOTCON2-EBZ drive system included in the Intelligent Drives Kit ensures engineers have a flexible prototyping platform for a variety of motor control architectures. Enabling control of up to two motors, the kit allows for system level prototyping of a full dynamometer, as well as multi-axis systems control. Having fully isolated analog and digital interfaces ensures robust system operation and reliable functional and safety isolation. The high frequency power stage combined with the precision analog signal chain provide highly dynamic system response and make this an ideal platform for implementing high performance control algorithms,” said Andrei Cozma, systems engineering manager, Analog Devices. “Freely available reference designs are provided to give customers a head start on designing their own system and help reduce the time needed to move a motor control system from concept to production.”

Kit Includes:

  • Avnet ZedBoard Z7020
  • Xilinx Vivado® Design Suite voucher (device-locked to Z7020)
  • Analog Devices AD-FMCMOTCON2-EBZ Module
  • 24V Brushless DC motor with encoder
  • Board and motor power supplies
  • Ethernet, HDMI and Ethernet cables
  • 8 GB SD card programmed with application
  • Linux drivers, applications software, HDL source, reference designs, full schematics and Gerbers
