Nordic Semiconductor demonstrates IPv6 over Bluetooth Smart and hosts design partners’ innovative wireless products at International CES 2015

Oslo, Norway – December 19, 2014 – Ultra low power (ULP) RF specialist Nordic Semiconductor ASA (OSE: NOD) today confirms it will unveil its nRF51 IoT Software Development Kit (SDK) and demonstrate IPv6 over Bluetooth® Smart to the international audience of International CES 2015. The company is also confirming details of exhibits, demonstrations, and partner companies that it will be hosting on its booth (Booth 70861, IT/Wireless TechZone in the Sands Exhibition hall) at CES. CES is the world’s leading consumer electronics exhibition and is organized by the U.S.-based Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). The event will be held in Las Vegas, NV, from January 6 to 9, 2015.

Nordic’s IPv6 over Bluetooth Smart protocol stack for its nRF51 Series Systems-on-Chip (SoCs) enables small, low cost, ultra-low power Internet of Things (IoT) applications. The nRF51 IoT SDK is a complete IPv6-ready Internet Protocol Suite for the nRF51 Series Bluetooth Smart SoCs. The SDK enables native and interoperable IP-based connectivity between a Bluetooth Smart ‘thing’ and a cloud service. It also enables Bluetooth Smart to be used in large, distributed, cloud-connected, heterogeneous networks such as home, industrial, and enterprise automation

Nordic has already been named a CES 2015 Innovation Awards Honoree for the nRF51822 Bluetooth Smart and 2.4GHz proprietary multiprotocol SoC with S110 SoftDevice v7.0. Products chosen as CES Innovation Honorees reflect innovative design and engineering in some of the most cutting edge tech products and services coming to market.

Companies from North America, Europe, and Asia which are using Nordic’s nRF51 Series Bluetooth Smart (see “About nRF51 Series” below) and ANT+ solutions in a number of innovative applications will demonstrate and talk about their products on the booth. (See “About Bluetooth Smart” and “About ANT/ANT+” below.) The partner companies are listed below:

  • adidas will demonstrate the adidas miCoach SMART BALL. Honored by the CEA as Best of Innovation in the Sports and Biotech category, the SMART BALL helps soccer players master their technique by providing instant feedback over Bluetooth Smart to a companion mobile app;

  • The Berg Company will exhibit its Merlin wireless pouring system. The company has been a world leader in liquor controls for over forty years. Merlin allows Berg to bring functionality that maximize profits and minimize waste to the restaurant and hospitality industries across the globe;

  • Delphian will exhibit SecuRemote, a technology that makes OEM products and devices directly interoperable with Android and iOS by using Bluetooth Smart. The heart of SecuRemote is a miniaturized electronic module that can be embedded into virtually any product. The module enables products, devices, and sensors to automatically form wireless networks and to interconnect with mobile devices and the Cloud with ease and reliability;

  • FitLinxx will exhibit AmpStrip, a small, beautiful, thin, sensor-filled strip worn on the torso all day, every day. AmpStrip continuously monitors the heart to provide feedback about athletic performance and recovery – helping the user find the edge between too little and too much training. AmpStrip has already been named a CES Innovation Award Honoree;

  • Kontakt.io will showcase its latest innovation, the Cloud Beacon. The Cloud Beacon combines the functionality of a Bluetooth Smart beacon with a Wi-Fi device and ties it all into a Cloud layer that provides storage and a complete analytics backend. By ensuring a constant connection to the Cloud, Cloud Beacon gives real world presence to the entire Internet of Things;

  • Logbar, a Japanese tech startup, will exhibit the Ring, a wearable control device in the form of a ring that allows the user to control objects with a single gesture including home appliances;
  • Poly-Control will show danalockwhich makes each day easier and safer by opening the front door with a smartphone. danalock locks automatically and unlock whenever the user approaches the door. danalock can be easily mounted and has been tasted by over 40,000 users since 2007;
  • ReSound, a world leader in wireless hearing solutions, will demonstrate its unique smart hearing aid ReSound LiNX. ReSound LiNX uses 2.4-GHz technology and Bluetooth Smart inside the hearing aid to stream stereo sound and data from Apple’s iPhone®, iPad® and iPod touch® without the need for an intermediate device. With the ReSound Smart app users can intuitively and discreetly personalize their hearing experience directly from their iOS device;
  • Ringly will be showing its new line of smart jewelry and accessories that notify the wearer of important calls or messages through vibration and subtle light. Ringly’s core belief is that technology can be more discreetly integrated into users’ lives. Set against the backdrop of a multitude of tech accessories, Ringly places fashion and simplicity first;
  • WiTricity will exhibit the WiT-5000C3 development kit, which comprises an end-to-end design for a multi-smartphone or tablet wireless charging system. The WiT-5000C3 kit provides the sample PTU and PRU devices, engineering evaluation tools, and a complete set of design documents that manufacturers need to design, evaluate, and demonstrate Rezence-ready wireless charging products;
  • WowWee will demonstrate MiPosaur and the Snap Pet. MiPosaur is a highly intelligent, robotic creature, which can sense its own surroundings and interact in a lifelike way. In addition to featuring GestureSense technology, that lets the user control it with the swipe of a hand, the MiPosaur has sturdy MiP (Mobile Inverted Pendulum) balance and also comes with an interactive TrackBall. Snap Pets is a fun and easy-to-use camera which sends photos wirelessly to an app via Bluetooth Smart, and also works as a remote (shutter button) for a smartphone.

“International CES is one of the leading events in the world for unveiling new electronics technology,” says J. Darren O’Donnell, Nordic Semiconductor’s Director of Sales – Americas. “So it’s fitting that Nordic is using the event to showcase its IPv6 over Bluetooth Smart stack and the nRF51 IoT SDK. This technology allows Bluetooth Smart devices to communicate using Internet Protocol, the ‘language of the Internet’, which is essential if Bluetooth Smart is to be a foundation technology of the IoT.

“There is no shortage of new technology from our design partners either,” adds O’Donnell. “The breadth of innovation is incredible and serves to show how the nRF51 Series’ unique architecture–which has been recognized by the CES Innovation Award judges–unleashes the creativity of developers that might otherwise be suffocated by the intricacies of RF engineering.”

International CES boasts more than four decades of success. In 2014, CES showcased more than 3,670 exhibits, including manufacturers, developers and suppliers of consumer technology hardware, content, and technology delivery systems. More than 160,000 attendees from over 140 countries attended the event.
