Improving the Accuracy of Flow Metering for Utilities

Operating for up to 20 years on a single “A”-size battery, the MAXREFDES70# ultrasonic flow meter reference design significantly improves water- and heat-metering accuracy. This solid-state flow meter is 10x more accurate than mechanical meters and 4x more accurate than competitive ultrasonic solutions. At the heart of the MAXREFDES70# reference design is the MAX35101, a complete time-to-digital converter with analog front-end (AFE) that measures the difference of upstream and downstream ultrasonic pulses with very high accuracy.

Expanding the Breadth of Wearable Medical Devices

Maxim’s Wellness Platform is a suite of hardware and software for wearable medical applications. Flexible and scalable, this platform lets designers optimize the capabilities of wellness devices, lower their R&D costs, and meet stringent time-to-market requirements. The platform provides power and battery management, digital processing, highly integrated sensors, ultra-low-power communications, and industry-leading security. The portfolio currently includes:

  • MAX32600 “Wasp,” a highly integrated ARM® Cortex® -M3 low-power microcontroller with high-precision analog performance. Its integrated Trust Protection Unit provides the highest level of security with onboard public key authentication, data encryption, and tamper detection.
  • MAX14676, a tiny power- and battery-management solution that saves space with a high level of integration. It extends the battery life of wearable electronics.
  • MAX21100, a monolithic 3-axis gyroscope plus 3-axis accelerometer inertial measurement unit (IMU) that provides low power and high accuracy. It is the industry’s smallest and thinnest 6DoF IMU with a stable, accurate gyroscope and reliable accelerometer.
  • MAX30100, a fully integrated optical biosensor combining two LEDs, photodetector, optimized optics, and low-noise AFE. It is the industry’s smallest and lowest power pulse oximeter and heart-rate solution.
  • MAX66242, a secure authenticator that is a dual-interface tag IC and combines an ISO 15693 front-end with an I²C circuit block on a single chip. Its SHA-256 engine runs a symmetric key-based bidirectional secure authentication scheme to protect against counterfeiting and cloning.

Advancing the Efficiency of Industry 4.0

The Micro PLC platform gives designers new tools to implement the efficiency of Industry 4.0 with less power, parts, and total costs. The platform consists of five reference designs, so compact that they fit together in the palm of your hand. They can operate as stand-alone subsystems and be configured and tested easily with a laptop’s USB port. The Micro PLC platform delivers a 10x reduction in form factor, provides > 50% power savings, and processes digital I/O outputs up to 70x faster than ever before. Supporting the Industry 4.0 distributed model, Maxim has developed multiple products that are interoperable with the Micro PLC platform:

  • MAXREFDES60#, an ultra-low-power, highly accurate 16-bit analog output system that includes a microcontroller and an isolated power architecture. Operating at less than 250mW, this complete system design is highly integrated and comes in an ultra-small form factor approximately the size of a credit card.
  • MAXREFDES61#, a quad analog input subsystem with isolated power and data, comes in a small form factor and typically operates at less than 500mW.
  • MAX11270, a 24-bit, 10mW, delta-sigma ADC with integrated PGA that offers the highest signal-to-noise (SNR) and lowest power in its class.
  • MAX17515, a 5A, 2.4V to 5.5V input, complete switch-mode power supply with built-in inductor that reduces energy loss and heat with 92% efficiency.
  • MAX17552, a 4V to 60V, 100mA, ultra-small synchronous step-down DC-DC converter that is compliant to IEC61131-2 PLC standards. It reduces heat dissipation and enables up to 50% cooler operation.

Mobile Payment

With the MPOS-STD2 mobile point-of-sale (MPOS) reference platform, payment terminal providers can enable customers to enter the emerging mobile payment market. Designers with little to a high level of expertise can significantly reduce R&D costs and get to market faster by moving through product design and PCI certification rapidly. The MPOS-STD2 is based on the MAX32550 DeepCover® MPOS System on a Chip (SoC), and incorporates important system-level MPOS terminal requirements.
