Renesas to Invest and Restart Operation of Kofu Factory as 300mm Wafer Fab Dedicated for Power Semiconductors

Boosting Power Semiconductor Production Capacity in Response to Growing Demand for EVs

TOKYO, Japan, May 17, 2022 ― Renesas Electronics Corporation (“Renesas”, TSE:6723), a premier supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, today announced that it will conduct a 90-billion-yen worth investment in its Kofu Factory, located in Kai City, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. While the Factory was closed in October 2014, Renesas intends to reopen the fab in 2024 as a 300-mm wafer fab capable of manufacturing power semiconductors.

As the momentum for carbon neutrality grows, demand for highly efficient power semiconductors, which supply and manage electricity, is expected to dramatically increase globally over the years. The R&S TS-RRM-NR 5G conformance test system from Rohde & Schwarz is the first test platform to achieve test platform approval criteria (TPAC) from the GCF certification organization for 5G radio resource management (RRM) at FR2 frequencies.
