Bourns New Surge Protective Devices Combine High Surge Current Capability with Built-in Thermally-Protected MOV for Enhanced Safety

Bourns® Model 1202-P Series hardwired Type 1 SPDs are engineered to meet the stringent protection now required in a growing list of AC infrastructure applications

RIVERSIDE, Calif., December 8, 2025 – Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components for power, protection, and sensing solutions, today introduced its 1202-P Series Surge Protective Devices (SPDs). These hardwired Type 1 SPDs combine high surge current capability with a built-in thermally-protected MOV mechanism that helps ensure safe operation even under extreme overvoltage conditions. The Bourns® 1202-P Series provides exceptional (20 kA) nominal discharge current and industry-leading (50 kA) discharge current that meets the broader and more stringent protection now required in a growing list of AC infrastructure applications that include service entrance, branch and OEM panels.

The increased demand for resilient power infrastructure from renewable energy and smart grid deployments is addressed by the 1202-P Series’ compliance with UL 1449 5th Edition. Resilience is enhanced from the device’s built-in thermal protection feature, designed to safely open in the event of overheating caused by abnormal overvoltage or Temporary Overvoltage (TOV) conditions, thereby interrupting excessive current within rated limits. The series also features LED visual indicators that alert users when the surge protector encounters any situation that requires the internal safety fusing to activate, thereby minimizing downtime.

This new series also satisfies the growing emphasis organizations are placing on fire safety with enhanced thermal protection in surge protection devices. These devices are IP66/NEMA 4X rated so the same device can be used both indoors and outdoors. As a Type 1 SPD, the series requires no external line fusing or circuit breaker, and can be placed on the line side of the main service disconnect.

The Bourns® 1202-P Series is available now in a 120 Vrms version as well as a 120/240 V split phase version and both are RoHS compliant* and listed to UL 1449 5th Edition. For more detailed product information, please see: bourns.com/products/surge-protective-devices/ac-surge-protective-devices.
