Future of mobile devices debated at FWS 2012

Future World Symposium has announced the complete line up of its panel debate on the future of mobile devices. The session brings together leading authorities on human interfaces, application processors, location technology, wireless standards, graphic cores, and device design to determine how the mobile device will change during the next five years.

The debate, held at Wembley Stadium on the 25th April as part of Future World Symposium, will examine the next waves of technological advances for the sector and how this will affect both form factor and human interface.

Taking part in the debate will be Altran Praxis, ARM, CSR, HP and Imagination Technologies.

“The mobile sector is incredibly dynamic; 3G services were introduced just 9 years ago in Europe; the original, game changing, iPhone is just five years old and the iPad just 2. By examining the underpinning technologies and user interfaces we hope to determine how portable devices will evolve, what they will be capable of, what they’ll look like and how they’ll interact with a user in the future,” said John Moor of FWS’ organiser NMI. “Commentators are suggesting we’re in a post-PC era, but what is the reality and what’s next?”

Chris Wild, CTO at Altran Praxis said: “The way we interact with our mobile devices is set to change unrecognisably. A possible model is HAL, from Kubrick’s film 2001, which interacted naturally, knew when it’s needed, understood normal language and chose the best way to give information to a user based on their situation. Applying existing hardware, such as GPS, accelerometers and HD cameras, offers the possibility of new and more natural interfaces based on speech, gesture and even body language. People will, however, get frustrated by algorithms that don’t match human performance and whoever gets this right will be very wealthy indeed.”

Future World Symposium is a conference and exhibition that unveils the paths of global technological innovation and takes place at Wembley Stadium on the 24th and 25th April.

Now in its second year, the event examines emerging trends and opportunities for future automotive, eHealth, connected home and mobile consumer sector. A series of persuasive talks will be given by industry leaders, analysts, and researchers.

The mobile consumer panel is one of four taking place at the event, joining debates and presentations on automotive, e-health and the connected home. Organisers have confirmed expert speakers from: ADI, Altran Praxis, ARM, Broadcom, CSR, Freescale, Frost & Sullivan, Gartner, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Imagination Technologies, Infineon, Isansys Jaguar LandRover, McLaren Electronic Systems, Microsoft, NDS, O2, Pure, S3 Group, Synopsys and Wind River.
