Barcelona, February 28, 2012 – Today at Mobile World Congress 2012, ST-Ericsson, a world leader in wireless platforms and semiconductors, unveiled the CG2905, the industry’s first connectivity platform solution with simultaneous support for GPS and GLONASS technology, Bluetooth and FM Radio all integrated on a single 40nm device. This breakthrough product will enable faster, more precise positioning, which in turn will fuel demand for augmented reality applications and other sophisticated location-based services that depend on very accurate location readings.
Compared to GPS-only solutions, the combination of GLONASS and GPS technology improves positioning accuracy in “urban canyon environments” where tall buildings can obscure satellite signals as well as significantly reducing the time it takes to initially determine a device’s location. Coupled with ST-Ericsson’s mobile optimized Wi-Fi solutions – the CW1250 and CW1150 devices – this new complete connectivity solution provides better power consumption and an improved experience for users of smartphones and tablets.
“ST-Ericsson built the CG2905 device from ground-up,” said Armand Guerin, head of the connectivity division for ST-Ericsson. “Rather than stitching together multiple cores to form a single-chip, we invested in careful frequency planning, chip isolation, and caging techniques to ensure seamless co-existence between the various radio’s on-chip and within the system. As a result, the CG2905 platform uses enhanced techniques to deal with cohabitation issues and close coupling with ST-Ericsson modems to provide advanced LTE coexistence.”
With the CG2905, the integration of passives helped ST-Ericsson to significantly reduce external component count, resulting in a small footprint that can easily be routed in a four layer PCB. For customers and consumer alike, this means that sleek, low-cost devices capable of supporting highly-accurate navigation, mobile social networking, augmented reality and other location-based services are now possible.
The ST-Ericsson CG2905 is currently sampling with customers. Devices using the CG2905 are expected to be available in the market in the second half of 2012.
