SMX® RTOS Now Available to Ease Development on AM35x Sitara™ ARM® Microprocessors from Texas Instruments

Costa Mesa, California, July7, 2011 — Micro Digital, Inc. is pleased to offer out-of-the-box SMX® real-time operating system (RTOS) support for the AM35x Sitara™ ARM® Cortex™-A8 microprocessors (MPUs) from Texas Instruments Inc. (TI). This new SMX RTOS support allows developers to get their projects off to a quick start with the middleware and drivers needed for many of the on-chip peripherals, as well as an exceptional graphical debug tool that helps programmers solve problems quickly. Developers also benefit from extensive error-checking and diagnostics in the software.

The AM35x Sitara ARM MPU generation is based on the ARM Cortex-A8 core. It has a rich set of peripherals, including Ethernet MAC, USB controllers, MMC/SD card controller, and LCD controller. It operates up to 600 MHz, with up to 64 KB on-chip SRAM.

TI prides itself in delivering tools and software to make development easy,” said Carlos Betancourt, marketing manager, AM35x Sitara ARM MPUs, TI.  “We’re happy to have a third-party ecosystem offering from Micro Digital for our AM35x Sitara ARM MPUs. Real-time operating systems are very important to many of our customers for applications such as industrial automation where real-time notification is imperative. The SMX package provides a comprehensive set of software libraries and tools to ease development and help reduce customers’ time to market.

Included in the SMX RTOS out-of-the-box support package are:  smx preemptive real-time multitasking kernel, smxWiFi 802.11a/b/g/i/n wireless stack, smxUSBH USB host stack, smxUSBD USB device stack, smxNS TCP/IP stack, smxFS FAT file system with MMC/SD card driver, smxAware kernel-aware plug-in for IAR C-Spy, and GoFast IEEE 754 floating point library. Full support, including project files and demo code, is provided for IAR’s Embedded Workbench for ARM toolsuite. Free SMX RTOS evaluation kits for the Sitara AM3517 eXperimenter’s Kit are available to download at www.smxrtos.com/eval. Demos for file system, USB, and WiFi are available at www.smxrtos.com/demo.

Micro Digital offers the broadest array of middleware modules among the no-royalty RTOS vendors. This makes SMX a good fit for the rich set of peripherals on the AM35x  Sitara ARM MPUs. Having all of these modules available and running today saves the customer the effort of sourcing them from multiple vendors or developing them in-house,” said David Moore, director of development at Micro Digital. “We have long supported TI’s ARM-based microcontrollers, and the support for AM17x, AM18x, and AM35x Sitara ARM MPUs complete our offering for small- to medium-size systems.

Availability and Licensing

SMX for AM35x Sitara ARM MPUs is available immediately for purchase and includes full source code, 90 days of technical support, and no per-seat charges.
