Open Kernel Labs Debuts Android “One Core” for Low-Cost Mass-Market Smartphones

CHICAGO and LAS VEGAS – March 23, 2010 – Open Kernel Labs (OK Labs), the leading global provider of embedded virtualization software for mobile phones and broadband Internet devices, today announced general availability of Android “One Core,” a complete solution to help semiconductor suppliers, mobile equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and mobile network operators (MNOs) streamline development and delivery of low-cost, mass-market smartphones based on Google Android. Android “One Core” includes the newest generation OK Labs mobile virtualization, OKL4 Microvisor 4.0, which enables OEMs to significantly reduce bill-of-material (BOM) costs. By consolidating application, multimedia, and baseband radio processing onto a single CPU, OK Labs customers can bring a high-performance smartphone user experience to consumers at a featurephone price.

The OKL4 Microvisor 4.0 offers the wireless/mobile ecosystem a shorter and smoother path to deployment, with patent-pending performance enhancements, and a new framework for developing and optimizing device drivers and abstracting hardware variations among Android-based handsets and other wireless devices. The OKL4 Microvisor 4.0 also offers superior security to support mobile payments, and to provide secure connectivity between mobile workers and business-critical enterprise assets in the data center and the Cloud. The OK Labs “One Core” solution for mass-market Android phones targets a wide range of mobile CPUs and SoCs from ST-Ericsson, TI, Qualcomm, and others. It supports both low-cost single-core and advanced multicore mobile processors, helping OEMs deliver cost-effective multi-OS devices today and providing a direct path for deploying on advanced multicore hardware in next-generation designs.
