Renesas Electronics and IAR Systems Announce IEC61508 Safety Compliant Development Tool for RX Microcontroller Designs

Santa Clara, Calif., November 26, 2013—Renesas Electronics America, a premier provider of advanced semiconductor solutions, has teamed up with its software alliance partner IAR Systems to offer a development tool for Renesas’ 32-bit RX microcontroller (MCU) series with compliance to the safety standard IEC61508.

“IAR Systems’ certified tool suite will enable customers designing with Renesas RX MCUs to streamline the certification process and reduce time to market,” said Ritesh Tyagi, senior director of microcontroller product marketing at Renesas Electronics America. “Renesas and IAR Systems have collaborated on several development tool solutions to date, and we are pleased to expand our strategic alliance with this latest partnership.”

Functional safety is one of the most important features in industrial automation systems today. To apply functional safety, system developers have to consider development tools as an integral part for the system certification in addition to the normal development. The proof of compliance for the tools increases cost and time of the development.

To solve this problem, IAR Systems now provides a new version of the complete development tool suite IAR Embedded Workbench for RX, which is already certified for creating safety embedded applications. It includes high-performance compiler and debugger tools incorporated in an easy-to-use integrated development environment.

The new application software development tool will benefit customers planning to use the 32-bit RX MCU family in their designs for safety applications. The solution will enable customers to proceed with the application software development without considering the normative requirements of the IEC61508 for the compiler tools. This shortens the development cycle.
