smx® Scheduler Upgrade

Costa Mesa, California, October 11, 2011 — Micro Digital, Inc. is pleased to announce a new scheduler for its smx real-time multitasking kernel. The new scheduler has been designed to make smx easier to port to new processor architectures. In the process of improving the code, code size has been reduced by 30% and performance has been improved by 50%. In addition, stack overflow testing and stack high watermark recording have been improved and simplified.

Releasing a new smx scheduler is part of a long-term process at Micro Digital to steadily add new features to smx and to make it a more rugged and easier-to-use kernel. The first step in this process was the release of smx v4.0, which improved the smx infrastructure and added a modern API.

Although smx has been in service for 22 years and is recognized as a very solid kernel, we feel that more can be done to enhance its usability and to assist developers to get to market quickly. In our view, projects have become so complex that developers need all of the help that they can get. In addition to a good tool chain, the RTOS is in a central position where it can either help or hinder development progress. smx has always had extensive error checking, and for many years, smxAware has helped developers to see the system picture. Now we are working on doing complicated things in simpler ways, on trying to help developers avoid pitfalls, and on offering new, more powerful capabilities.

Over the months ahead, Micro Digital will be releasing a steady stream of new and improved smx features. smx is currently available for ARM, Cortex, ColdFire, PowerPC, and x86 processors, with others to be added in the coming months.

Availability and Licensing

The new smx scheduler is now shipping. smx includes full source code, 90 days of technical support, and no per-seat charges. All of Micro Digital’s software is royalty-free and sold with a 30-day money-back guarantee. Evaluation kits are available, at no charge, for qualified evaluators from www.smxrtos.com/eval
