Two ultra-heavy (radioactive) elements added to the periodic table

“A committee of international chemists and physicists have officially added two new elements to the periodic table: the ultra-weighty elements 114 and 116.

They’re the heaviest members of the table yet, with whopping atomic weights of 289 and 292 atomic mass units respectively. The previous heavyweight winners were copernicium (285) and roentgenium (272).” via Wired

Gamer goes from Gran Turismo to LeMans

“It started in 2008 with a smart marketing blitz by Sony, Nissan and PolyPhony Digital, publishers of the wildly successful Gran Turismo racing sim. The idea was to see if accomplished digital drivers could actually translate those skills to tarmac.

[Lucas] Ordóñez, who’d competed in karting as a kid, was among 25,000 online entrants who posted their scores. He was hot enough to represent all of Spain in a real race at England’s famed Silverstone circuit. He won.

His prize? The unprecedented opportunity to compete … Read More → "Gamer goes from Gran Turismo to LeMans"

EnergJ system could cut computer power consumption by up to 90 percent

“As computers, data centers and mobile devices become more powerful, their energy requirements are likewise generally increasing. Possible solutions to the problem include power-saving sleep modes, devices that keep computers from drawing a current when supposedly turned off, and water-cooled processors. EnergJ, a new solution created at the University of Washington, takes a different approach – it supplies less power to regions of the chip that are performing processes that don’t require absolute precision. In lab simulations, it has already cut power consumption by up to 50 percent, although that amount could potentially reach as high as 90 … Read More → "EnergJ system could cut computer power consumption by up to 90 percent"
