Intel places $30 million bet on the cloud, opens two new labs at Carnegie Mellon

Intel is gambling on the future of the cloud. Investing $30 million over a span of five years, Intel has partnered with Carnegie Mellon University to open two new Intel Science and Technology Centers. The academic research labs will laser in on cloud and embedded computing research, providing open source innovations that tackle mass data analytics, real-time information service distribution and refinements to a future, cloud-connected lifestyle.

Man busted for DIY fission experiments

To all you amatuer physicists, time to clear out that stash of uranium in your basement and disassemble your fission and cold fusion experiments. Richard Handle, 31, of Ängelholm, Sweden was attempting DIY nuclear energy experiments in his home when it occurred to him that possession of radium, americium, and uranium might be illegal. He contacted Sweden’s Radiation Authority to ask. His suspicions were confirmed when police arrested him.

Philips snags $10M L Prize with energy efficient light bulb

“The U.S. Department of Energy announced today that multinational electronics company Philips snagged $10 million in the L Prize for developing an energy-efficient light bulb powered by light emitting diodes (LEDs).

The LED bulb can generate around 900 lumens — a measure of the amount of visible light emitted by a bulb — while consuming around 10 watts of electricity.” via VentureBeat
