Plug-in hybrids that can run on electric motors or internal combustion engines may soon be able to pick and predict their powertrain use depending on location and past driving habits.
It’s part of a collaboration between Ford, with their years of driver behavior research, and Google Prediction API, which can make useful predictions in real-time using that historical data.
Ford first announced that collaboration at Google I/O … Read More → "Cloud connectivity turns cars Into chameleons"
It’s one of the important questions facing American society today. On the one side are the liberal-minded who want more regulation; on the other side, conservatives who despise any proposals put on the table.
I’m speaking, of course, about the debate of whether or not technology should be used to call balls and strikes in baseball. via Singularity Hub

Lytro, the world’s first light-field camera, made its debut today at an event in San Francisco. The camera records fields of light instead of pixels and allows users to focus after they’ve taken a picture. We’ve talked about the technology behind this camera previously, but this is the … Read More → "Lytro, the world’s first light-field camera"

These days, if a stuffed animal’s plastic eye so much as wiggles, that toy is recalled faster than you can say “class action lawsuit.” Back in the day, though, child safety consisted of just getting out of the way and letting natural selection do its thing. If a kid was too dumb to play with a toy the right way, well, he’d just have to learn to get along with one less eye.
That meant molten glass, molten metal, hazardous chemicals — all were included in toys back then … on purpose. via < … Read More → "The 8 most wildly irresponsible vintage toys"
The dream of riding in floating cars like The Jetsons is one of the oldest dreams presented in science fiction movies, but now a group of researchers have unveiled a demonstration that makes such a reality seem tantalizingly close.
Researchers from Tel-Aviv University recently showed off their Quantum Levitation project at the ASTC Annual Conference, and the performance is simply stunning. The group coated a thin superconductor layer … Read More → "Quantum levitation demo proves floating cars are on the way"
In 1960, computer scientist J.C.R. Licklider published Man-Computer Symbiosis, a paper that outlined his dream for interactive computing and helped pave the way to the creation of the graphical user interface.
This week, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Emerging Technology Conference here, another scientist suggested that there may soon come a time when people no longer have to touch a keyboard or a mouse, or even speak a command, in order to perform a computer function. via Read More → "Thought-controlled computers may soon be a reality"
