One dude beats AMD’s overclocking world record

amdworldrecord2.jpg

Just last month, AMD staged an event to squeeze an amazing 8429.38 MHz out of its FX-8150 processor. The highest-clocked CPU in the world—it was a big production. And now they’ve been beat by a team of one.

Andre Yang eked out a 32 MHz advantage over AMD’s team—but he did it without the sponsorship, camera crew, and most importantly, the teamwork. via Read More → "One dude beats AMD’s overclocking world record"

Cordon multi-target photo-radar system leaves no car untagged

radar.jpg

Go easy on the gas, Speed Racer, because Cordon is on its way. Developed by Simicon, this new speed sensor promises to take highway surveillance to new heights of precision. Unlike most photo radar systems, which track only one violator at a time, Simicon’s device can simultaneously identify and follow up to 32 vehicles across four lanes. Whenever a car enters its range, the Cordon will automatically generate two images: one from wide-angle view and one … Read More → "Cordon multi-target photo-radar system leaves no car untagged"

Your Kindle gets heavier as you add e-books to It

Screen_Shot_2011-10-31_at_9.25.51_AM.png

When you load up your Kindle (or iPad, or smartphone) with data, the transistors in the flash memory use a trapped electron to distinguish between a 0 and a 1 (the poetic language of computers). According to Einstein’s theory of relativity, E=mc² if something has energy, it has mass and weight. A small, undetectable, theoretical amount of mass and weight. We’re talking about an atogram, or 10 to the -18th of a … Read More → "Your Kindle gets heavier as you add e-books to It"

A solar industry smackdown

A fierce battle has been heating up in the solar industry. At the heart of the issue is a complaint leveled by the German group SolarWorld, which alleges that Chinese companies are aggressively undercutting competitors’ prices through the use of cash grants and subsidies, according to Reuters. On Wednesday of last week, SolarWorld’s U.S. division filed a trade case against China. Six other companies co-filed the case, but anonymously, potentially out of fear from being shut out of China’s market down the line. The seven companies have requested that the Commerce Deparment … Read More → "A solar industry smackdown"

BMW Head-Up Display gets some color

bmw_color.jpg

Formerly a safety feature available only on the 5-series, BMW is expanding the optional BMW Head-Up Display to almost all of its vehicles. The new system improves on the old mono-chromatic graphics projection by adding more realistic and intuitive images and symbols, and displaying them in a full color spectrum. The brighter images are less tiring on the eyes and easier to read. These changes will make it easier for drivers to discern the information points that are … Read More → "BMW Head-Up Display gets some color"

Success for Andrea Rossi’s E-Cat cold fusion system, but mysteries remain

Against all the odds, Andrea Rossi’s E-Cat cold fusion power plant passed its biggest test yesterday, producing an average of 470 kilowatts for more than five hours. (A technical glitch prevented it from achieving a megawatt as originally planned). The demonstration was monitored closely by engineers from Rossi’s mysterious US customer, which was evidently satisfied and paid up.

The energy was output in the form of heat, measured by the quantity of water boiled off. The results are reported in NyTeknik and Pure Energy Systems News, … Read More → "Success for Andrea Rossi’s E-Cat cold fusion system, but mysteries remain"

Will consumer-level cold fusion be proven this weekend?

Screen_Shot_2011-10-29_at_12.22.11_PM.png

Today in Italy, a new energy technology called the E-Cat is undergoing its first independent test of energy output. The E-Cat supposedly uses low-energy nuclear reactions to produce massive amounts of cheap and clean power, and if it works, it could completely revolutionize our entire society. If it works.

For the last several years, the E-Cat concept and prototypes have been bouncing around the nuclear energy … Read More → "Will consumer-level cold fusion be proven this weekend?"

Don’t try to convert friends to your tech religion

You probably love your phone, tablet, and other miscellaneous touchscreens—that’s why you bought them. But now that we anticipate, live, eat, and sleep with our gadgets, they’re being deified. Don’t let your fandom turn you fanatical. Relax.

Just think about it—whenever you make an informed decision to go Windows Phone or Android, you’re not just choosing a device, you’re choosing an ideology. Each of the big three is acutely distinct from the other—Android for the control freak, iOS for the aesthete, Windows Phone for the … Read More → "Don’t try to convert friends to your tech religion"
