Self-healing electrical circuit could aid space applications

A team of University of Illinois engineers has developed a self-healing system that restores electrical conductivity to a cracked circuit.

Led by aerospace engineering professor Scott White and materials science and engineering professor Nancy Sottos, the researchers published their results in the journal Advanced Materials. via the engineer

The man who championed the transistor, Norman Krim, dies at 98

Norman Krim, an electronics visionary who played a pivotal role in the industry’s transition from the bulky electron vacuum tube, which once lined the innards of radios and televisions, to the tiny, far more powerful transistor, died on Dec. 14 in a retirement home in Newton, Mass. He was 98.

Mr. Krim, who made several breakthroughs in a long career with the Raytheon Company and who had an early hand in the growth of the RadioShack chain, did not invent the transistor. (Three scientists … Read More → "The man who championed the transistor, Norman Krim, dies at 98"

Chris Mocella and the chemistry of fireworks

A couple of weeks back I had the pleasure of moderating an American Chemistry Society webinar on the Chemistry of Fireworks with pyrotechnics guru Chris Mocella.  It’s not quite emerging technologies, but Chris gave such an engaging talk that I thought I would post it here.  It’s a great intro to some chemistry basics, and perfect for high school chemistry classes. via Andrew Maynard at 2020 Science

Wanted: “Roboticist Apprentice Extraordinaire”

Trossen Robotics is looking to add another member to the team. The optimal applicant will be able to handle very very long hours, extremely sarcastic work environments, have a diverse skill set (IE: customer service skills are as good as engineering skills), readily tackle challenging projects, and be able to hold their own in Halo Firefight. via Trossen Robotics and Boing Boing

SpnKiX mechanized roller skates

spinkix.jpg

SpnKiX are mechanized roller skates. They run for up to three miles, at speeds up to 10 miles an hour, on a single two-hour charge to their LI-Ion battery pack. Users control their acceleration through a hand-held remote, presumably braking as well. They’re available in Men’s 6-14 and Women’s 7-15.5 but can only support 180-pounds, which seems really light given that they’re sold in Men’s 14. The SpnKiX … Read More → "SpnKiX mechanized roller skates"
