DARPA moving forward with zombie satellite program

phoenix2.jpg

Back in October, we posted about a program DARPA has been working on to rip apart dead satellites and harvest their organs to make new(er) satellites. It seemed more than a little crazy, but the program is now moving forward, with DARPA holding industry conferences and putting down millions of dollars on the idea.

Recycling dead satellites makes a huge amount of sense. By some estimates, there’s a third … Read More → "DARPA moving forward with zombie satellite program"

The snarky voice in your head is killing your productivity; here’s how to stop it

There’s a jerk inside all of us: we roll our eyes when someone in line has a complicated order, curse at little old ladies who don’t drive fast enough, and sneer at people who are just too happy. Over time, that snark kills our productivity and poisons our relationships. Here’s how to keep your inner asshole in check.

There’s a difference between being occasionally sarcastic and a little derisive in your head, but when negativity becomes your default reaction, you have a problem. You may have had a wake-up … Read More → "The snarky voice in your head is killing your productivity; here’s how to stop it"

How astronauts train at the bottom of the sea

astro-water1.jpg

Since 2001, planners at NASA’s Extreme Environment Mission Operations (NEEMO) program have been sending people to live in Aquarius, an underwater laboratory three and a half miles south of Key Largo, Florida. Last month, during NEEMO’s 16th mission, three astronauts lived there for 12 days, testing strategies for future asteroid expeditions, evaluating the best spacewalking techniques, and planning how to sample rocks and soil.

SpaceX joins aerospace elites to test new engines

SpaceX is upgrading its engines. A month after the company’s historic trip to the International Space Station, SpaceX says a new and improved version of its Merlin rocket engine has passed initial testing at its development facility in McGregor, Texas (video below).

And it’s turning out to be a rocket-engine-testing kind of week. Two other NASA-funded programs from Orbital Sciences and Boeing also tested new engines.

Europe’s fastest supercomputer uses warm water cooling to conserve energy and heat buildings

ibm_supermuc.jpg

An innovative cooling design for SuperMUC, Europe’s most powerful supercomputer, will use warm water instead of air to keep tens of thousands of microprocessors at the optimal operating speed and increase peak performance. The system, which is said to cool components 4,000 times more efficiently, will also warm the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre Campus that hosts it during the winter months, generating expected savings of up to US$1.25 million per year.

Researchers take wireless to ludicrous speed at 2.5 Tbps

Researchers at the University of Southern California, Tel Aviv University and NASA’s Jet Propulsion lab have used their massive brains to show off a way to deliver speeds of 2.5 terabits per second wirelessly. That’s 500,000 times faster than the current low-end LTE speeds and 5,000 times faster than the 5.5 gigabits per second, which is the fastest theoretical wireless broadband I’ve encountered in my years covering wireless.

These researchers have managed to achieve this epic speed at a distance of less than one meter using what researchers call “ … Read More → "Researchers take wireless to ludicrous speed at 2.5 Tbps"

Latest way to deal with space junk: huge clouds of tungsten dust

leo-orbit-debris-mit.jpg

Space junk is becoming more and more of a problem as nations haphazardly chucks stuff up into orbit, and a variety of schemes have been proposed to deal with it, including lasers, explosions and janitor satellites. The latest idea comes from the Naval Research Lab, and it involves giant clouds of dust.

NASA estimates that “there are more than 21,000 orbital debris objects larger than 10 centimeters (roughly four inches) … Read More → "Latest way to deal with space junk: huge clouds of tungsten dust"
