The skeleton of the universe? Cosmic web of mysterious ‘dark matter’ detected holding two galaxy clusters together

filimant.jpeg

A huge ‘bridge’ of invisible ‘dark matter’ has been detected holding two galaxy clusters, Abell 223 and Abell 222, together.

The filaments are thought to be a ‘glue’ that holds huge galaxy clusters together, but dark matter is extremely difficult to detect, as it does not emit any radiation.

Instead, the ‘bridge’ was detected by the gravitational ripples it caused in space, distorting … Read More → "The skeleton of the universe? Cosmic web of mysterious ‘dark matter’ detected holding two galaxy clusters together"

Watch a live stream of the Higgs Boson announcement tonight

Scientists at CERN will announce their most recent results in the search for the Higgs boson early on July 4 – with many speculating that the discovery of the long-sought particle will finally be official.

Join us here for a live feed from Europe of the event starting at 11 p.m PT tonight (2 a.m. ET). The announcement of results is expected to begin at midnight PT, featuring spokesmen from the Large Hadron Collider’s two Higgs-hunting experiments, ATLAS and CMS, followed by a press conference and question … Read More → "Watch a live stream of the Higgs Boson announcement tonight"

Sigalert gives you ridiculously detailed traffic info for those long, painful drives

sigalert.jpeg

If you need a bit more info on traffic than your navigation app can give, Sigalert provides you with color-coded maps, detailed information about traffic flow, camera feeds, and up-to-date information about accidents and road construction.

Most navigation apps—like our favorite, Waze—will navigate you based on the flow of traffic, and even show you where slowdowns are happening. Sigalert is better as a companion app, for when you’re planning longer routes … Read More → "Sigalert gives you ridiculously detailed traffic info for those long, painful drives"

Aim high: 10 of the world’s most impressive paper planes

lifting3-660.jpeg

Back in elementary school, paper planes were the class clown’s preferred weapon and the bane of teachers everywhere. A few of those fold-and-fly amateurs have taken their school-time shenanigans to the pro level, becoming aeronautical engineers and origami artists who create record-setting gliders. From the biggest to the trickiest to the most intricately designed, here are 10 of the most impressive paper planes on the planet.

Hidden portals found in Earth’s magnetic field

According to NASA, Jack Scudder—a researcher at the University of Iowa—has found “hidden portals on Earth’s magnetic field [that] open and close dozens of times each day.” Some of them are open for long periods of time.

Scudder says that these portals “create an uninterrupted path leading from our own planet to the sun’s atmosphere 93 million miles away.”

Scientists have finally made stretchable circuitry

Bendable electronics are nothing new. But if you’re after an electronic party trick, you’re going to want to get your hands on a new breed of stretchable circuitry.

Elastic electronics are something engineers have been lusting over for a long ol’ time. It’s not hard to understand why: current constraints mean that most circuits are solid or, at best, slightly flexible. Imagine the possibilities if your conductors could stretch to many times their length.

“We’ve observed a new particle”: leaked video reveals Higgs confirmation

“We’ve observed a new particle.” That’s the opening statement in a video featuring Joe Incandela, the spokesman for the Large Hadron Collider’s CMS detector, made in a video that is currently publicly accessible on the CERN website. The video, first spotted by ScienceNews and now apparently pulled, appears to preempt the big announcement scheduled for early tomorrow morning. It also implies that this year’s data was enough to push the evidence for the Higgs past the five standard deviations needed to declare discovery.

“When we say … Read More → "“We’ve observed a new particle”: leaked video reveals Higgs confirmation"

FitBot revolutionizes clothing retail by conforming to consumer measurements

Professor Maarja Kruusmaa  working alongside Fits.me COO Diana Saarva has created a virtual fitting room which enables users to virtually try on clothes before buying them.

All told, the robot is capable of replicating 2,000 body shapes. When a retailer signs up with Fits.me, they first send in their clothes. Each size is placed on the robot, which then cycles through all the body shapes it knows.

While that’s going on, a camera is taking pictures of each permutation. This photographic log is then stored in an online … Read More → "FitBot revolutionizes clothing retail by conforming to consumer measurements"

Metropolis restored: a sci-fi cinematic masterpiece is whole once again

Metropolis is widely considered to be one of the greatest films ever made, telling the tale of class warfare and uprising in a dystopic society that has been spurred by an cyborg fashioned in the likeness of an aristocrat’s dead wife. But the version the vast majority of us had seen was not the original cut that German director Fritz Lang had submitted to studios; rather it was a considerably shortened version that had been slowly restored—but never completed—over the years. Then in 2008, a discovery was made.
