‘Google Maps’ for the blind

Designers Andrew Spitz, Markus Schmeiduch and Ruben van der Vleuten have developed a Braille-like navigation device for blind people, to help them navigate new routes in cities.  Called ‘Blind Maps’, the device provides the blind with a tactile interface to help them navigate through new routes, intersections and turns—as well as warn them of road hazards.

The Mycestro 3D wearable mouse

While we now have scroll-wheels, wireless connections and touch-surfaces, the basic form factor of the computer mouse remains remarkably similar to the box-with-a-button first demonstrated by Douglas C. Engelbart back in 1968. This doesn’t mean there haven’t been attempts to shake-up mouse design though, and the latest to cross our desk is the Mycestro 3D mouse – a thumb-activated, wireless mouse that attaches to your index finger.

Ready to be amazed? According to Ultra-tech, a Florida-based containment provider for chemical clean-up and waste management, its new Ultra-Ever Dry coating is an amazing product. The coating is “super-hydrophobic” and “oleophobic,” meaning it repels almost any liquid on a wide range of materials, including – but not limited to – hammers to boots and gloves.

Meet Pneupard, Osaka University’s air-powered cheetah robot

Roboticists around the world are in the process of reverse engineering the anatomical construction of cheetahs and other cats in an attempt to develop faster and more agile legged robots. The latest project, dubbed the Pneupard, hails from Osaka University. Although still early in development, the new biomimetic platform stands out from some of the others through its use of pneumatic artificial muscles as its primary means of locomotion.
