NASA’s Swift satellite reveals neighboring galaxies in unprecedented ultraviolet detail

Data from NASA’s Swift satellite has been used to create the highest-ever resolution images of our two nearest galaxies, the Magellanic Clouds. The detailed ultraviolet light surveys measure 160 and 55 megapixels, and cumulatively show some 1.25 million ultraviolet sources.

The two images show ultraviolet light ranging from 1,600 to 3,300 angstroms, a range of light that is largely blocked by the Earth’s atmosphere. Physicist quits academia, starts making Fabergé fractals

Scotland-based laser physicist-turned-artist and web developer Tom Beddard, aka subBlue, has produced a number of intriguing geometric forms he refers to as Fabergé Fractals. Like an ornate Fabergé egg, Beddard’s creations boast brilliant and intricate design patterns. The English artist uses a formulaic method to create his digitally rendered three-dimensional models.

Long exposure photographs of fireflies in the forests of Nagoya City by Yume Cyan

For the last month or so photographer Yume Cyan has been shooting some magical long exposure photographs of fireflies in a forested area around Nagoya City, Japan. By keeping the camera’s shutter open at a low aperture Cyan captures every bioluminescent flash of each insect resulting in dotted light trails that criss-cross the frame.

How a teenager Rickrolled Vine

Web developer Will Smidlein managed to bypass the six-second upload limit on Vine today, inserting the entirety of Rick Astley’s immortal “Never Gonna Give You Up” into a post that was ultimately taken down by Twitter. “I think I broke Vine,” Smidlein tweeted, along with the full embed of the song. He previously tweeted that Twitter engineers had asked him to take the post down.
