Is this sustainable hut the future of affordable student housing?

hut.jpg

The concept was developed for students at Sweden’s University of Lund. Each hut is made from local, cross-laminated wood, and fits a sleeping loft, bathroom, kitchen, garden, and patio into the layout like a clown car for college kids. It has a fold-down kitchen table, and built-in shelving and storage to maximize the space. It’s such a smart layout that apparently it reduces rent by half and cuts down on its carbon footprint … Read More → "Is this sustainable hut the future of affordable student housing?"

Soldiers can get emotionally attached to robots, and that may not be a good thing

Julie Carpenter, from the University of Washington, recently published a thesis entitled “The Quiet Professional: An Investigation of U.S. Military Explosive Ordnance Disposal Personnel Interactions With Everyday Field Robots.” The investigation is whether or not having an emotional attachment to an EOD (explosive ordinance disposal) robot might influence the decisions made by the robot’s operator to the extent that it could alter the outcome of a mission.

Astronomers create detailed 3D map of Milky Way core

eso-3d-map-milky-way.jpg

Astronomers have used data from European Southern Observatory telescopes to create a three dimensional map of the central bulge of the Milky Way. The gigantic cloud at the center of our galaxy contains a staggering 10,000 million stars (or thereabouts) and resides around 27,000 light-years away. Despite the relative proximity of the area, prior to these new studies little had been confirmed concerning its origin and structure.

Throughout their lives, baleen whales develop wax in their ears, just like humans do. Every six months, a new layer, or “lamina,” is deposited. The laminae have regular color differences due to annual feeding and migration patterns, allowing researchers to distinguish each and every six-month period in the whales’ lives. Since whales don’t clean their ears like we do, their entire history is recorded in the … Read More → "Giant gobs of earwax tell a whale of a tale"

In 2009, Sheriff BJ Roberts was struggling for re-election. Adding insult to injury, when he went to his opponent’s page on Facebook, he found that six of his deputies had “Liked” the page, signing on to the campaign to remove him from office. After he won reelection, he held a grudge and fired all six men. Now courts are facing a sticky … Read More → "Appeals court rules that Facebook ‘likes’ are protected as free speech"
