Trunk-like Le Tronc Creux shelter sleeps nine in the French countryside

French design studio Bruit du Frigo has drawn inspiration from fallen down tree trunks, which often provide shelter for small animals, to create an eco-shelter for humans in the forests of Bordeaux. Dubbed Le Tronc Creux, which means “The Hollow Trunk,” the low impact shelter is roughly the same size as a shipping container and can easily be transported by truck to different locations when required.

Implantable bio-patch grows bone where it’s needed

Help could be on the way for people who don’t have enough bone to support dental implants, who are missing bone due to a birth defect, or who have suffered bone-damaging injuries. Scientists at the University of Iowa have created an implantable collagen patch seeded with particles containing synthetic DNA, that instructs the patient’s own cells to produce the protein that leads to bone growth.

Touch screens are calming to monkeys, children of the world unsurprised

Monkeys in captivity are often used for studying psychology due to their intelligence and ability to manipulate devices in much the same way as humans. In a study published on PLOS ONE, a research team at the University of Portsmouth found that when the macaques were allowed to choose to leave their social groups to participate in the touch screen testing and return at their leisure, it curbed fighting and led to stronger group … Read More → "Touch screens are calming to monkeys, children of the world unsurprised"
3D printing hits fashion as Victoria’s Secret ‘angels’ get their wings

Victoria’s Secret, Swarovski, and 3D printing marketplace Shapeways have joined forces to give Victoria’s Secret models their 3D printed angel’s wings.

Shapeways then 3D-printed Rothenberg’s filigreed snowflake wings, which were finally encrusted with & … Read More → "3D printing hits fashion as Victoria’s Secret ‘angels’ get their wings"
The throwable, panoramic ball cam is finally here — and it’s incredible

When we first got wind of a throwable, 36-lens compound camera that automatically snaps 360-degree panoramas at the height of its toss, we were already impressed—and that was jus the prototype (seen above on the right). Now, the officially named Panono camera is nearly half its former size, just as powerful, and finally ready to be caught by consumer hands. And after playing around with the ball for a bit, … Read More → "The throwable, panoramic ball cam is finally here — and it’s incredible"
I Fought the Law, a photo series that illustrates bizarre state laws

In Alabama it’s illegal to have an ice cream cone in your back pocket at all times.
“I Fought the Law” is a photo series that illustrates (and often violates) bizarre state laws like a Texas prohibition on unusual kid’s haircuts and California law that bans biking in pools. The series is by New York City photographer Olivia Locher.
